His body movement and fa-jin are different from other Chen players I have seen.

Yes, very different from village Chen, though he is doing the xinjia form. Lots of shoulder and very exagerrated spinal bow...I am not sure I like how his head moves, but interesting stuff. The CMC people (ie Napoli and that Hypnosis Works fellow) seem to like this.

Anyone know where/who he learned his Chen from?

To me that has very little to do with CZK

His foot work is very strange, the head bobbing is something I've never seen before

I dont know anything about him & he may have some good abilities but I dont see much of a CZK influence at all

I always found his shen fa to be off putting. Could never figure out why he always hunched his shoulders and head like that. Still, he did have some skills. Perhaps his forte was in the other styles of tjq that he practiced.

I was his first student way back in Pittsburgh 1986 from Carnegie Mellon University. Zhang Lu Ping was not a chen style specialists. I studied mostly different styles of kung fu from him(Wah Mountain, tan tui, etc). Later I studied yang style, ba gua , and a little xing yi from him. When I met him I was taking Ho Chen Pai from Toni Haddad and White Dragon from Ernest Rothrock in Pittsburgh. I meet him in a laundry mat when myself and a friend was going over some forms. He asked "did we know kung fu". I said "yes maybe we can trade some forms". My friend Fred was in the special forces at the time. We invited Lu Ping to his apartment in Oakland and He asked to see our kung fu. We showed him (he wasn't impressed) then it was his turn. He had us attack him and we got knocked all over the apartment. I got knock over a table, a couch, both feet off the ground into a corner. I couldn't believe this little guy was knocking us around like rag dolls. I learn very quick and we started taking private classes with him the next week. Needless to say I didn't trade any forms with him. I trained with him till he passed away in 1998 (sad day).

Stephen welcome to the flower

would be interested in hearing anything more you would like to share...

my teacher said that he started to study under Zhang Lu Ping after he took a seminar and after the seminar he asked to feel it for real and was thrown back into either a a table or some folded chairs (i forgot what he said it was but the impression was that it was quite a distance).

Interesting reminiscences.

But "not much internal energy?" I wonder if Stan will perhaps square this circle for us, with some reminiscences of his own...

zhang lu ping taught a brief chen style fa jing seminar at a chan san feng festival i attended, years back.

he was a good patient teacher. and when he demonstrated, very clearly a formidable person.

i mentally filed him in the 'guys-i'd-never-want-to-get-angry-at-me' category.

I have heard many first hand recounts of Zhang's power, and his intelligence. I believe he was a PhD in Mathmatics?? I have heard references to one or 2 of his sons still teaching in the Boston area.
