Pigua Combat, Scenes in Cangzhou, Porker Chopping

Postby Andy_S on Wed Jul 29, 2015 1:47 am

CCTV docco on Pigua. This is one of the better ones in the series of "foreign oaf challenges Chinese masters:" This is a Russian sanda guy, and the early fight actually looked real, not staged (thought I suspect it was edited to favor the local boy).

Some good drills and advice ("Pigua power should be like a spinning windlass unwinding") and some scenes filmed in Northern CMA capital Canzhou, including slicing open a hog carcass with a fucking big sword.

Oh, and it finishes with some very nice tongbei. The master in this is pretty enlightened - he has included western boxing in his art.

And I am awed by the upper body flexibility his student shows when he his showing whipping strike drills - he touches the back of his own thigh with his arm on the backswing.

These are, I would guess, great drills for upper body opening-closing and limb relaxation.

Wow, thanks for sharing Andy. For me this is the best of this series by far. Not only have they managed to visit some huge names in Pigua (Wang Zhihai, student of Guo Ruixiang; and Guo Naihui, student of Ma Mingda / Ma Xianda), but the fighting in this seems not staged at all, and fairly realistic. Also the footwork, speed and power shown by Wang Zhihai and Guo Naihui are very impressive.

Which begs the question, if they could do this for Pigua, why were the Xingyi, Yiquan and Taijiquan episodes so disappointing?!

nice clip! Thanks for posting. For those training in both baji and pigua, you can see the logic of why Li Shuwen reunited the training and integration of the systems. It also shows how critical basic training is in the pigua system and the importance of hand training.

Nick:

RE: Best of series
Yes I thought the same. They are not portraying the foreigner as a thuggish, uncultured buffoon, and the fighting was real and decent. I wonder if the producers had complaints about the silly and stagey nature of the show, and so decided to upgrade the veracity of the presentation (ie straight docco, no silly acting with the gwailo demanding a throwdown with the masters, etc) and the combat (ie they are really gloving up and sparring, rather than doing "four strike" challenges and other silliness)?

Bob:

I really like what I see of Pigua, the upper body whippiness and looseness that this system inculcates would, I think, benefit martial artists of any striking style.

I really like this kind of stuff.

It's alway snice to see people applying their stuff in this format.

This Piqua palm does not belong to Li, Shuwen's lineage. It is passed down by Ji family. This is Ji family Piqua palm.
The practitioner in the film should be professor Ji who is currently teaching in veterinarian department of National Taiwan University.
He inherits martial arts not only from his family teaching but also from master Liu, Yun Chiao (Li, Shuwen's disciple).

Similiar to what I have learned.
