(I've also seen Zuan expressed as a vertical elbow strike in a couple of lesser-known, family lineages of Hebei Xingyi that claim to be 'purer' than others.)

From my perspective, (and very limited knowledge,) it's not a question on what is legitimate, more a question of lables.

In Song style Zuan there's a strong emphasis on the power going in two opposite directions in Zuan, one upwards in the arm/upper body, and another downwards in hip / lower body. <Shrug>

In the method I've learned every fist focus even more on the opposite side of the body. But to be fair, there are several different schools of body mechanics in XY, some of them really focus on force in one direction. I like this clip, here it seems more like the opposing arm is there for balance, it hasn't power going in two opposite direction, but it's seem quite powerful. Zuan starts on 0.20

I don't quite get the point
He did a whole lot of unrelated movement then snuck in a press
Don't put power into the form let it naturally arise from the form

Looked to me like he was describing a spiral up from the ground that would end in the Ji.

That was not dai style zuan, it was xinyidao zuan.

He did a whole lot of unrelated movement...

This my opinion of xinyidao in general.

Well, they (Xinyidao folks) practice spiralling into and out of everything, and Yang can (could) readily demonstrate how each part of the spiral is used for striking, unbalancing, locking, tripping, throwing, striking again.

Maybe just big frame vs small frame movement then.
