Spiralling arms applied/Taiji sansau

Postby Andy_S on Sun Aug 30, 2015 10:23 am

Some joyous play here from Gran Maestro Wang Xian's man in sunny Italia.

First clip: mainly one-two moves, but with the added sophisticated of spiraling arms. He adds in a few finishers here and there, adds a bit of footwork toward the end, and finishes with some PH competition footage.

Second clip: Some "Taiji sansau" here - one of the better clips I have seen of integrating kickboxing-range material into the more typical taiji close-range work. Complete with soundtrack by Robbie!

Very impressive, good find Andy! This teacher looks like he has got some real skill and can use it, situation for Chen style overseas (particularly in Europe / US) just keeps getting better and better :)

The methods are good... But still... He just showed techniques on stationary students. There's nothing in the clip that says he has skills to use them. :P ... I respect Wang Xian though and he usually produce good students. 8-)

Italy has a lot of great IMA teachers and many great Chen style teachers. I would guess that when it comes to TCMA Italy has more to offer than most of European countries. 8-)

Just don't understand why the students kept holding on the upperarms or whatever, after being thrown so many times. I saw the same thing on Chen Yu's clips.

Please teach your students the correct ways!!!!

Nailed it Taijikid, I was wandering is that something the teachers force the students to figure out on their own, as part of the learning experience ? Holding on is a request to be shaken.
The point . is absolute

they hold on because they cant let go,, he changes the contact point ying/yang point.
by the time they feel anything its to late the force/jin is already past the point of contact

seems like a lot of clashing and crashing into the other for something billed as taiji.
to each his own.

If I understand your criticism (?)
: In Chen Taiji, a lot of the partner work is done from the clinch, and the upper arms and shoulders (tricep underhooks and shoulder underhooks) are useful positions/grips from which to apply techniques. And this range is useful, as grabbing arms, body (and/or clothing) are essentials in grapples and are common in real fights.

Is this what you meant?

RE: Bad basics

Care to elaborate? What he is showing here is (bar Wang's fajing form), standard Chen Village basics.

Andy,

Are you sure people fight like that? Grabbing both upper arms like that and don't let go? Unless you are much more stronger than me and try to throw me like a rag doll.

Here is a scenario of a good teacher who knows more.

Teacher: Grab me on both of my upper arms.
Student: OK, (mumbling to himself, but that's double weight ?)
Teacher applied a technique and throw the student down.
Teacher: WTF, why you holding on me.
Student: You told me to Grab on!

Teacher: OK, I grab both of your upper arms and you apply the technique.
Student: OK, (mumbling to himself, haha revenge)
Student applied the technique and throw the teacher down.
Teacher: WTF, why you throw me.
Student: You grab both of my upper arms and don't let go!

Sure, that latter scenario is pretty common in pub fights, and I would image that anyone who has been "bounced" out of a location by a doorman is also familiar with it.

I take the point you are making in the below comments - very Socratic!

But I would add that the upper arm or chest grab is a much more common attack than the arms-length wrist grab so commonly shown in SD scenarios. (The wrist grab made sense in the days when you wanted to stop a chap drawing his sword, but in today's world, you are much likelier to be "shaken like a doll" and thrown around, or grabbed in advance of a punch, kick, knee or headbutt.)

I think it is equally worthwhile to practice from the clinch as it is from non-contact (ie from a punch or a kick). For whatever reason (let us not have this debate yet again) Taiji's fighting method, which is either developed out and/or trained from the platform of PH, tends to work from close range. Also - for both better and for worse - that means largely from established contact.
