Is that pad made with the pelt of a dog? I've read about it but never actually seen one!

Hi, C.j.W

Yes we traditionally use the pelt of a dog in Tongbei.
There is few way to use it in the video I use the head but some use the back, actually it depend of which gong-fa that you will practice.
There are two big reasons that we use pelt:
-we use the pelt because it has a kind of oil which is good for the hand.
- The skin is a kind of like human skin.
The skin should not be too dry, mine is old, and in Europe I won’t use it ha-ha ;D

I’m thinking to make more serious video about tongbei and gong-fa in future, wish you enjoyed it;-)
Have a nice day

If dog pelt has a kind of oil which is good for your hands, why don't you just pet a dog?

I still don't understand why you're hitting a dog face.............

We do a drill like that in our Taiji form and condition it on heavy bags, but we retract the hands and don't leave them out there. The idea is some martial art styles can counter if you leave your arms out there hanging. Also if someone has a knife or sharp blade/sword they can cut your wrist or even your hand off.
