pt 1
chest is hollow.
hips set back, ready to lead into emptiness.
back is rounded.
body melts where force is applied, connection maintained.
dynamic tension between holding one self back and extending forward.
body full.
elbows down.
sink at first touch.
rotate.
(2:52) a shovel or capture or press interchangeable.
movements from the forms become effortless and leading into one another.
everything is transformable...

I wonder whether his hunched back and overly curved spine are due to old age or incorrect IMA practice.

It could be all of the above. but it could be a bow, a wedge. I've seen things like that.
incorrect, I don't think so. bent too much, yes.

C.J.W. is probably correct. If you look at how he begins and ends you will see that he is not able to lower his shoulders or straighten his back. Moreover, there is very little dorsal spine movement as he runs through the forms. My dx - moderate osteoarthritic degeneration of the spine.

Under normal circumstances, correct IMA practice should be able to strengthen and keep the spine healthy -- as opposed to causing a hunched back and other spinal deformities.

I've seen a number of older IMAists (especially Taiji folks) who develop a similar curve in the back. They are usually people who misinterpret "contrain the chest and pull up the back" (含胸拔背) and end up with a hunched back.

This Xinyi practitioner seems to have some spinal problems as well:

Yes, that is definitely the result of arthritic changes in the spine. It may not be his martial arts practice though. Progressive arthritic degeneration may or may not be mitigated by exercise or therapy.

These videos were posted on YouTube by John Kells, my old taiji classmate from way back in the 1960s, who learned from Master Hsieh in the '70s. We need to take a look at how John plays his taiji these days:

I have little doubt but that this kind of extreme spinal distortion, though presumably disease is also a factor, is due at least in part to practising taiji for many years in the hunched-over manner for which many of Zheng Manqing's followers are known.

He has immense charm and a very original mind, to say nothing of his wonderful Irish 'blarney'.

Accidents do happen, unfortunately. Sorry to hear that.

I always wonder about someone who can blast someone across the room with out touching them but can't stand up straight
Don't put power into the form let it naturally arise from the form

Some are, some not. The most defensive ones tend to hunch, have seen a lot, some are really good at yielding, many don't have any Yang!

They may have just not what you might feel it to be.

no need to wonder, in one of his clips he mentions about 2 bad accidents.
He is straight where it matters, with out this going to BTDT what he shows is not
blasting someone across the room. They'er reacting to what they feel....its the same as what some say about being able to
unbalance some one at first touch. That most dont question ;)

What I found quite interesting was his explanations of what he feels is happening and how he does it.
dglenn, and some others might be able to comment on his ideas of "heart" "thymus" how they interact and
what he feels he is doing with them.

ding which is a straight line from heaven to earth, man in between, has applications especially in moves the rotate.

the bent over type movement in the o.p.is a wedge. the wedge is used in fending off forward attacks but hinders the rotation a bit.
guys flying across the room with non touch? I would have to see it myself and I'm not going to yield or listen.
there is intent which goes beyond movement, that intent effects people the same way as if someone had
walked in a room who was in distress or very un happy or very excited. those feelings are picked up by other people.
we are built like that, but this other stuff???
