Ian, it's taiji movement.. and all that involves. It's for training your mind and body in the ways of taiji movement. That's about as simplistic as I can make it.
Generally speaking the opening posture here is more about 'preparation' as I see it, so there's a bunch of things in there he seems to be doing to get things going so to speak; body forces, 'energy work'. To name some.. edit. but mostly he is focusing on doing vertical up and down forces and combining them. The opening in plenty of forms after wuji is up and down, but is usually kept pretty basic and simplistic, here it is very much elaborated on. Towards the end he adds some forward/ back with the hands..
At some point you need to be able to 'know the difference' between the movement principles and the form/ boxing postures. They are not one and the same thing. It's what you're doing with them/in them that is the heart of the matter..
The goal is to gain taiji movement first in fixed shapes/ techniques/ movements, but then to free oneself from fixed techniques and choreography and rely on the principles therein to move freely into any and all shapes and techniques (no fixed technique) according to principles/ methods.
Well at least I can say that's more or less how I do taiji (formwork). From form to 'shadow boxing', this is form and this is the framework.
