Does your training include weapons sparring of any sort?

I love weapons more than anything in martial arts. Said that, these guys are horrible. The hema guy (I'm a hema guy too) desperately needs basic training.

Sparring with weapons is necessary, otherwise it's really easy to do a ton of stupid things that no swordman would never do.

For sparring we use fencing masks+reinforced gloves+body protections needed depending on the weapon. All targets and close combat allowed, sparring stops and starts again when any guy gets a clean hit or is overwhelmed.

For sparring we use steel weapons. 2mm blunt edges for safety

So the fencing masks stand up to heavy blows with 2mm steel? I was looking at them and they seem like they'd crumple under moderate impact. Likewise the foam pads, I'd think they'd start chipping and disintegrating pretty quick.

Quickly done video. Fencing mask (price around 120€) used since 2007 receiving thousands of blows in the meantime.

Bad idea . The real danger is not in the blows, even the worst ones probably just would give you heavy bruises or break a finger, is the chance of weapon breaking in the middle of the sparring. Blunt steel (or even wood weapons) that breaks means danger of death coming at you. You don't want to be wearing crappy protections if that happens.
