Damo does a really good job explaining stretching, tension and generating Jin.

Check it out.

Very well-said.

I've seen quite a few MAists who spend copious amounts of time on conventional stretching exercises and pride themselves in their extreme flexibility. Little do they know that the types of stretches they do (as well as the manner in which they are performed) often have little benefit in terms of power development.

Cjw,

Very true. One of my early teachers remarked that people who had studied too much of the extreme flexibility yoga couldn't learn how to fahjing. Later on I saw what they were talking about.

Those practitioners had deformed their ligaments and tendons to the point that they couldn't generate the necessary tension/lines of force.

True that. People of Xiong Wei's Taiji Daoyin are like that, they neither can fajin nor hit, but for me, it was nearly impossible to get any lock working on them, only could hit them (lightly).

It's all about parameters not how flexible you are
Over flexibility is as bad as lack thereof
Don't put power into the form let it naturally arise from the form

Good stretching in anything should be about releasing tension in the muscles, not "stretching" tendons

Does systema have a fajin type concept of movement?
The form is the notes, the quan is the music

Elements within the continuum of all martial systems involves flexion, extension, adduction,, abduction, pronation, suppination, etc so it isn't special or secret. How you train and involve the mucles may be a better orientation. Even baduanjin, as simple as it is has most elements of stretching, tension and other stuff ;D

There are whipping-type strikes, wave / pulse hits, heavy hits and so on, but in terms of driving out from the "centre"I would say no, at least not in the ways I learnt in various Yang styles, Ba-ji, Hsing I, etc
