Dominic Jones’ dynamic talk highlighted how the scientific understanding of human movement is critical in the study of the martial arts. According to his instructor Dr. Ron Chapél, it is the responsibility of the martial scientist to experiment and find the most effective movement patterns that consistently perform in hands-on, stressful, self-defense situations. The audience enthusiastically participated in eye opening martial science experiments and discovered in the words of Ed Parker, that “To see is to be deceived, to hear is to doubt, but to feel is to believe.”

Associate Professor, Consultant, Martial Scientist. Focused on helping others achieve their education, business and personal development goals.

This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

Considering the location of the talk and the nature of his demonstrations emphasizing walking and hand shapes, my guess is he has picked up a few things from local Japanese sources, mainly the materials popularized by Kono Yoshinori.

Kono is a Japanese kobudo teacher whose work has been featured in multiple books and magazines in the past 15 years or so, and widely used for reference by Japanese martial artists who are interested in the body mechanics of martial arts.
