Taiji teacher KO'ed by MMA

Practice makes perfect. You only get better at what you actually train. I'm not sure why he even accepted that challenge; clearly they have trained some very, very different things, and the rules of engagement were clearly much closer to the "rules of training" of the MMA guy.

It's like a break dancer challenging all classical ballet people to do some sort of a street-style "dance off" thing, and a ballet dancer accepting it, probably thinking something along the lines of: "it's all in the 'dancing' category, isn't it? I've been classically trained and practiced very hard for many years, so I should be able to handle it; how hard can it be..."

Not even sure I would say "kudos for accepting it". It's like apples and oranges IMHO.

Everyone was kung fu fighting.

Except not everyone was fast as lightning or very frightening.

I've see worse beatings that took less time at the Lei Tai Championships, usually when a ringer gets paired up with a delusional amateur in the early rounds...oh wait, that's what just happened here.

Although, points to the tai ji guy manning up even if he got his bean pummeled.

As Steve said plenty of mma matches go that quickly then the guy comes back and reverses the results

Thanks for posting it. I read on various Chinese websites that the Taiji guy has been featured on the TV show "Experiencing Real Kungfu," but couldn't find the episode. Many Chinese netizens have commented on the irony that someone who was touted as a Taiji master on TV couldn't even last 10 seconds in a fight against a mediocre ex-MMA fighter.

I give him props for having the courage to publicly take on an MMA guy, but it is painfully obvious that he has little to no experience dealing with realistic attacks in a live environment. My guess is, like the vast majority of Taiji guys, he only focuses on forms and PH.

Have you watched the start of that "experience real kung fu: Yang style Tai Chi" - it's so utterly fake it's incredible.

Hippydipshit sees Thai boxers doing some training, thinks I can handle that, puts on his headscarf (very important apparently) and proceeds to display some godawful attempt at IMA while looking like a complete dick. His kicks are especially painful to watch. And his deadly footwork. The Thai boxer throws a few useless attacks then falls over in agony when hippydipshit does a deadly double palm push to his chest.

Basically, the lesson is: everything (on TV) in China is fake. Everything.

Credibility is zero.

That's all I'm getting out of this.

Good to see it from another angle
The tai chi guy,I am giving him the benefit of the doubt by calling him that
He shows his lack of training and use by putting his guard up while the other guy is 30 ft away
No real fighter would do that
His guard is silly with both hands high and the forward one at full height
Saying that the mma guy doesn't land a blow until the tcc guy trips on the silly foam mats
They are a surface that takes some getting use to
I wonder if the tcc guy knew that ground and pound was part of the deal
It is tv ,was it a promotional tool used by the ufc to show its superior to traditional arts

in the "Experiencing" vid the host said "look like" many times
in a socio-psychological setting, i call it coordination by association.
that is person knows that ppl are looking and they project what others are looking for...
to gain credit and approval in the group
you will notice that it has nothing to do with real skill critique and development

it is the same for traditional ma ppl making their way into other forms of ma
such as bjj, mma etc, they have to start by speaking the language and renouncing
what they had learnt in the past.
it is nothing new, you see it all the time here also.

Push Hands as it's currently practice has changed many aspects of the way taiji is used or could be used. By making the training for a skillset competitive the larger objective​ that the skill-set enables is lost. This is not something unique to taiji happens in other styles and systems​.

He is called a Tai Chi Master by those who view him as such and come to learn and train from him. Obviously at some point he had to prove his skill set to those in his community and to those who seek it.

He lost, and will regroup, hopefully updating his understanding in the process.

As to the ref I think he made the right call because otherwise people would complain that he stopped it too soon.
