Well, I think that has successfully cleared that up once and for all.

Would love to see him go up against Xu Xiaodong just to see his big fat ego get a real beating. Sadly, it would just give the "tai chi sucks" people more fuel to their verbal fire. :P

One thing you can't argue is that Wong is a master of writing powerful headlines; 14,096 views within 6 hours. -shrug-

Aw shit, I agree with almost everything he says, starting with attitude, and certainly getting in close. It's funny as all hell, though :).

Actually, if it comes down to a challenge match or even a bar fight, I'd still bet my money on our beloved Master Wong over an average Taicheeeee maestro. ;)

The man is obviously in great shape, and he trains hard and knows how to apply his stuff against common attacks. His timing, footwork, and entry usually ain't bad either.

Am I a huge fan? Not really. But still, I feel like he deserves credit where it's due.

No, he is part of the problem! All his "stuff" is clearly choreographed, it's all just designed to impress. I know people who knew him before he was "Master Wong", believe me, it's all for show

What he shows and says is still theory. Some of it makes sense though... maybe... :-\

Yeah, isn't it all too obvious? He speaks a lot, but his lack of fighting experience shows. I like his energy and humor, but he is indeed a part of the problem. A big one, especially so because of his humor and making it entertaining. It's hard to dislike him or what he does. A fresh breath of air in some respect. But if you look more closely... :-\

BTW, I watched the OP vid very briefly but had a better watch again. I don't agree with anything else than to enter and make contact, great. But it won't make the other guy suddenly freeze up.

What he does is not Tai Chi. From a TCC perspective, it's too hard, too stiff. If the other guy counters fast, he will be too slow.
Also, aggression, anger, going in with force etc. belong to another philosophy. That kind of attitude or mind-set is exactly the opposite to what you want to achive. It will lock you up, constrain your ability to think clear and make your decision making slower. The Tai Chi classics says: "like a cat attacking a mouse". " like an eagle seizing a rabbit, and the spirit like a cat taking a mouse". Eagle and cats are not angry or feel aggression. An eagle has focus, determination. A cat is playful, looks at the hunt as a funny game. But I believe it's a common mistake and that many people confuse a pro-active mind-set and determination with aggression and anger.

If you understand that entertainment has always been part of the complex puzzle that is Chinese martial art then the fact that Master Wong is an entertainer plying his wares on YouTube should not come as a surprise :) He's not 'part of the problem' - in fact he's carrying on a fine tradition. What you need is a better understanding of what you're looking at.

This video is from a day in the life of a Chinese market place in 1910 - the martial artist as street performer at the end. How is Master Wong not just a modern version of this guy with the swords in the last minute of the video?

Beautiful video. But the big difference is that everyone accepted those shows as entertainment. They were not supposed to teach anyone about anything.

Good points chaps - and I think though these things started out as entertainment, they gradually morphed into something else. Art became life

I don't think they started out as only entertainment. It was only one part of the (much larger) pie - Chinese Marital Art has always combined a whole host of things together: religious, cultural, physical fitness/self defence, entertainment, etc...

It's expecting CMA to be about only ass kicking that's the misunderstanding.
