Project: CMA in MMA

Code name: "Ten Tigers of Practical Hung Kyun"

Below is a video from one of the entry tests for the candidates: 1 round of free fighting (3 minutes). Apart from that, the candidates went through strength & conditioning tests, and 10 minutes horse stance test.

Nice light sparing I would quite enjoy that even at my age
Do you break down and analyse where traditional hung gar could be used in the sparing

Wayne, traditional Hung Ga Kyun was never meant for sparring - you can use parts of it in the combat sports environment, but I would say only about 30%. That is the reason why our students specialise: Some of them practice mainly for reality-base self defence, hence they take part in our PHK Combatives program, others in PHK Free Fighting program. There is of course lots of overlap.

As for the "Ten Tigers of PHK" project, the students learn:

- fundamental standup game (more or less same the same for all combat arts)
- clinch/ground game (in many respects very different from TCMA)
- and then they will ad Hung Kyun special hands, such as Seven Stars, Thousand Pounds, Drunken Immortals, etc.

I'm also very interested in this. Definitely keep us posted.

And nice work! I appreciate the methodology you appear to be using (learn the techniques - develop your attributes (internal & external) - practice techniques via forms and in progressively more alive settings: empty hand, pads, sparring).

Best,
Greg

Plus 1 for Gregs comment. Really like the way you set up your training methodology to make the most of all aspects of your art. I like that it's not all or nothing, like some schools will be all forms, street techniques but no sport, or some will reject all the street applications in favor of the sport applicable techniques. I appreciate that you make use of all possible aspects. Seems like good honest training

Fubo: thank you for your kind words. The thing is that is is not "either/or", but "this and that".

From our PHK instructor's manual:

Paired Exercises (Deui Lin): Application Drills (Saan Sau), Sparring Sequences (Wui Hap), Sparring Drills and Sparring/Free Fighting (Saan Da).

PHK focuses on development of the combat skills from two different but same perspectives:

- PHK Combatives (Jin Dau), represented by PHK core combative program “Eighteen Application Drills”, application drills from the sets, and specialised curricula (ground fighting, knife defense, multiple opponents, third party protection… )...

- PHK Free Fighting (Saan Da). Both approaches have their pros/contras, so make sure you are aware of them. We don’t want to turn PHK into purely self-defense/self-protection system, or into a full contact combat sport either, although we use the training methodology of both.
