Put a bearded axe or 'hawk in Graham's left hand in the first 30 seconds or so of his clip and it'd have a well-assisted stroke to an enemy's knee/thigh. An iklwa or assagai would be equally effective with the same stroke. Just sayin...

Are these empty hand and spear "forms" similar for single or double bladed use? Just curious. All my xingyi knowledge is from RSF. :)

Every school of hsing I that I have seen that have weapons seem to have quite differing forms
They go from ones that are quite similar to the empty hand solo forms to ones that are quite complex
Some of the more complex one I find it hard to see the individual 5 elements in
So I wonder about the origin if they were added from other schools

I don't know what you mean. Single hand use and double hand use can be very different. For a spear, the rear hand is active and the one in front quite still. You use the dragon's tail to strike with, not with it's head. Double bladed use, i.e. for double weapons often use both hands quite equally, like striking with both of them at the same time.

just for the sake of entertainment:

That clip was awesome Bao - hadn't seen it in ages.

Kept expecting an RSF Referee to interrupt it and go - "ok, technically that last one you did wasn't forwards AND down, so it doesn't count, ok? Now please resume.... Combatch!" :)

Exactly. 8-) This XY saying comes directly from spear/staff play. The body use and power generation as well.

ok next set of noob xingyiquan questions then:

1. if pi quan is downward and you are holding a spear, what kind of blade is at the front of the spear? is it like a dagger on a piece of wood? so you could downward slash with an edge? or is the only cutting edge the point? same question for other directions of movement.
2. if the blade on the spear is an edge, then if you put a dagger in one hand with the other hand empty handed, you do these "forms" the same way, but it's no longer front hand hit, rear hand apply? is this more like an empty hand application? same with a stick? if I try this out, totally naively, it seems like that is the case.
3. forgot but will think of it... maybe I was thinking of a double dagger kind of situation.

basically every weapon michelle yeoh's character picks up in the above scene - whether long and bladed, two blades, blunt stick ... how much do these 5 element "forms" transfer over?

for me, starting clearly from not knowing and progressing to knowing
is part of the fun in learning
it show to me clearly that i have improved in skill and understanding

one verse in 5-Words of LHBF says one must see the impossible as possible
this ïmpossible" is fighting using an invisible spear, its not there

my understanding is you must train till the feeling of the spear is in you
in your heart, mind or intention
how you do it to this level, to the inside, to the internal....
this become how come some cannot do, some have good skill and
some is the high hand.

Side note: how much you wanna bet she never studied xingyi or tai chi or IMA or MA? Yet she has a "finishing" move.

That was a downward slap, aka a smack down. If it had been a chop, the guy might not wake up.
