"spy style"

Postby everything on Sat Aug 12, 2017 7:55 pm

here's a video that really isn't IMA related but it has a couple of interesting parts, the second of which is more relevant to recent discussion here, but the first part is kind of interesting for other reasons:

part 1 - about 6:00-6:30 he changes from "battlefield style" to "spy style" to show how he would disguise some moves and get away while being aware of a 2nd threat.

part 2 - not sure, fast forward. basic stuff but he says "one form" (can't remember exact phrase) is for multiple applications (this is more relevant to some of our recent discussion, mainly about taijiquan forms as different applications.

The headline led me to think about this story............- One night, he was awakened by the sounds of "Hen" (哼) and "Ha" (哈) in the distance. He got up and traced the sound to an old building. Peeking through the broken wall, he saw his master Chen, Chang-xing teaching the techniques of grasp, control, and emitting jin in coordination with the sounds "Hen" and "Ha." He was amazed by the techniques and from that time on, unknown to master Chen, he continued to watch this secret practice session every night. He would then return to his room to ponder and study. Because of this, his martial ability advanced rapidly. One day, Chen ordered him to spar with the other disciples. To his surprise, none of the other students could defeat him. Chen realized that Yang had great potential and after that taught him the secrets sincerely.

not sure. just thought his variation to use a "soft" "spy" technique vs. a "hard" "battlefield" technique was interesting.

plus reusing the same form in a different application as we have discussed here many times recently.

So what do people think of how he applies his art
I am sure I saw some typical Silat applications in there

Too soft & makes assumptions that attackers are soft. Against a strong opponent there are going to be problems.

Take at 6m mark. Against a wrestler it goes to neck/giraffe wrestling and its easy to reverse.

The whole head thing at 6m mark is better done as a strike.

After that it's easy to apply a head strike to the face again and again and it wont last long.

I think he's saying around 6:00 specifically not to do a bunch of normal strikes because of the 2nd would-be attacker. That said, maybe he or whomever couldn't actually do that; no one knows. There are too many factors. IF you're really just being lightly grabbed and not already in some kind of fight, maybe ... ??? I knew a guy who threw all his coins and a couple of bills down and ran away. Knew a friend of a friend who used his karate kick to the head, then ran away. One quick thing and run away may be possible; I don't know. Getting into a "battlefield" type fight being a bad idea. That seems like a good comment.
