Its the aunkai shiko. So did this (modfied) exercise come from aunkai or daito ryu/aikido?

Hah. Where do you think Akuzawa got shiko from? Then again, where did Akuzawa discover cross-line connection in shiko (instead of three-axis connection) from?

This version came through Dan, though, but looks like a riff on a version of it Dan taught years ago (can tell by the "refresh" that happens between reps). It is not being explicit enough about the connection of hand through to opposite leg and the windings, and not necessarily what he teaches now. Dan's came through Daito-ryu, none the less.

I think the soft squishy mats underneath the canvas makes it difficult to balance.

Yes I will agree with that
Does that explain why when he holds his arms out to the sides at some points there is a six inch difference in their height

No real cross-body connection in what Gleason is doing, and he is "double-weighting" (committing his body mass to one side of the body). That's why he wobbles.

He wobbles because his balance is gone at one stage he has to put up the other hand to stop from falling over
The students have better control than him

Maybe because he was in a “talking mode”?

His balance is gone because he does not have cross-body connection, thus his mass is committed to one side of his body, instead of being "balanced" between his right shoulder and left hip/foot, and left shoulder to right hip/foot. When his left foot is off the ground, it should be "full" from his right shoulder/hand; when his right foot is off the ground, it should be "full" from his left shoulder/hand. That is one of the purposes of shiko: to develop that dynamic.

Internal method is reliant on mindfulness and awareness, which drive intent. For this stuff to "work" in combat, you have to train your mind to maintain your internal structure, even when moving and fighting. Being able to maintain structure and harmonizing forces and movement within your body while talking should be much easier, but I guess there are always distractions. :)

I would love to see a video of someone as knowledgeable as you doing this exercise, so that we all might learn how to do this properly.

So is that the way it goes if someone points something out that is obvious
You all make excuses for the practicioner then attack the person who points it out
So what do you think of his balance and where are your videos
Don't put power into the form let it naturally arise from the form
