Seated Chong Chuan Core Work

Postby Steve Rowe on Wed Dec 13, 2017 7:02 am

Put this up on social media to show that you can still do good core internal work even if you can't use your legs (which i can't do at the moment)

15 surgeries 2 infections 3 new knees 2 antibiotic spacers resulting in 3 of the 4 quads missing on both legs and a fused right leg. So they are basically knackered - can limp around but hard to train other than seated.

I've learned from a bowling coach in a wheelchair. I started learning taiji whilst unable to feel below my sacrum and a largely spastic and contracted left side of my body so I had to be seated. The practice just changes focus.

This explained the leaning in Wu
It's for when you can no longer use your legs
Don't put power into the form let it naturally arise from the form

I'd have loved to have seen more core work there he only seems to be moving his arms and leaning a bit.

I think you will find the Wu guy is just trying to put together an exercise routine for the chair bound
He is not concentrating on his core,a word I never heard in the first 30 years of my training
It would be easy to incorporate a greater range of movement in his form engaging the core.
I had a book years ago with line drawings of Chen Wei Ming doing a seated set.
Like the Wu guy Chen seemed to be pretty relaxed about the whole thing.
The tai chi form was designed as a standing dynamic set and it can be modified to fit any circumstances.
However I think there are many better sitting sets to do
Yoga, aikido, sitting ba tuan chin, tai chi ruler and others
Don't put power into the form let it naturally arise from the form

Unable to use my legs much I find that core mobility is really important to keep in good health and maintain mobility, strength and vigour, which is why I developed the form in the way I did, therefore a static set like the Wu one is only as good as the 'if you're happy and know it clap your hands' type of exercises often given to those with disabilities.
