Some examples of Swing fist. A move from Wu taiji. Nothing fancy, but a great technique.

Thanks alot, Paul.
This kind of knowledge is almost lost today.
Great to see that someone is still able to teach this.
I also enjoyed your new Qin Na video.

A very common move in TCMA, northern and southern styles alike. Very useful in sparring. 8-)
In our Yang branch, rolling over the elbow is considered to be hidden in the form in the transition into “single whip”. The right upper arm in the vertical hold ball position is a parry parallel to the opponent’s left hand. Your arm follows the movement of his arm and folds over the elbow. Your elbow sinks over his elbow, taking his balance and the hand can be formed into a backfist if you wish.

But you are correct that not many tai chi schools teach this movement. For yang schools especially, there’s a conception of never raising the elbows to not stop the flow of qi. Ridiculous as it might seem, this idea really affects these practitioners appreciation of what is correct application of movements.

I agree, once again Paul shows great technical skills, but not practical in a realistic fight situation at all?.

IME it’s a very practical move. I haven’t used it in any real fight (didn’t know about it back then), but well in sparring. You can roll over you elbow over an arm regardless if it’s outstretched, half stretched or over a guard position. It’s very, very practical and can be used in many different situations and settings.

What is a realistic fighting situation :

May be someone throwing several fast aggressive punches, maybe?

::)

Then it might be better to step to the side and try to avoid his fists?

So you mean that for a technique to be realistic and useful it must work in every single situation regardless of what happens? Lol! What if someone picks up an axe and throw it against you? ;D

... What if? What if?

... Well, what if you tried to cope with a situation by adapting to what is actually happening instead of forcing any kind of technique just because you believe that a good technique should work in any kind of situation? :P

Realistic is relative.
Like Bao said.
Don't forget there were often weapons involved in the old days.
Many techniques are very practical if you see them in the context of grappling with weapons or for weapon control/access.

It is after all just a backfist. In the form it is accompanied with a standing palm, the same waist movement drives both. The palm has the real power.
