The entry for the first throw is actually a pretty standard application I've seen in Northern Shaolin Long Fist for a big fancy "flowery" move that involves backward side-stepping and arms moving in big circles. The second application is also found in some Praying Mantis forms as a follow-up when you miss a forward foot sweep.

Like he says, train large and use small.
