Chansi jin and Xiao Baji Jia

Postby Bob on Thu Sep 07, 2023 3:07 pm

A very insightful illustration of the subtly of the various jins employed in the Li Shuwen/Liu Yunqiao line of bajiquan.

2019年也錄製過一個「雙栽捶」的應用視頻,幾年後因吸收不同的反饋、試驗後有不同的理解,這集來做個調整。
There’s was a post in 2019 that I posted about this same move “Shuang Zai Chuei” application. After a few years, after some questions and feedback from all over, I’ve made some adjustments.

Thanks for introducing this channel. I have to dig into it more

My teacher said that in Beijing the triad gangs learned nailing elbow to attack people, so you have to prepare yourself and learn how to defend against it.

Those guys are doing a great job with the material of GM Liu Yunqiao - they are sharp!

They are leaving the groin area unprotected with such a wide stance. In the second video at the 3:00 and 4:15 mark, the bigger man is exposed but the teacher does not take advantage of this. I understand this is an elbow strike demonstration but there is no mention of this defensive liability.

Your iron crotch technique is clearly lacking.

I retract them whenever my wife wants sex and I'm too tired. After all, I'm no "Iron Balls" McGinty.

If interested here are some further bajiquan applications - Baji primarily close range and you can see the structure in a more "aggressive" range of applications - lateral crab movement like entry -front foot often closed 45 degrees to protect crotch area

Why elbow-punch in BajiQuan should be 45 degree

The Best Bajiquan vs Muay Thai Match - Amazing Kungfu Throws In The First Round

One of the best matches ever that I found on a bajiquan practitioner stepping into the cage to test his kungfu skills against a younger Muay Thai person. The Baji representative (in red gloves) clearly wins round one with his superior throws and takedowns, but the Muay Thai practitioner (in blue gloves) adapts so well by round two and shows why Muay Thai is still one of the best base systems to train if you want to do 1-on-1 combat sports. This is an absolute gem of a match that showcases clear stylistic differences between two arts. For viewers who have takedown defense that you've learned in Muay Thai or wrestling etc., please send me footage!

Thanks for those videos. Bajiquan is all business. Great stuff.

I think it's a solid system among many other systems. Lots of good stuff out there.

I always laugh about the story told when Liu Yunqiao was in his early twenties and challenged the Six Harmony Master who was in his forties - Liu got knocked down 3 times and went back to complain about his weakness - His senior gong fu brother Zhang Xiangwu laughed and said "you pulled the whiskers of the tiger (a master)" - Liu had thought the softness of the 6 harmony mantis made it a weak system and it was a mistake to assume that - Zhang Xiangwu made arrangements so that Liu could learn that system from the master.

My own speculative thought is that it was the lesson of softness that stuck with him as today many characterize Liu's baji system one of the "softest" among the other lines

One of my favorite clips with regards to bajiquan. This was a time when it was popular among many Western Chinese martial art circles to espouse that all traditional Chinese martial arts on the mainland were dead and all that prevailed was contemporary wushu:
