A bit ironic how BL in the US was around at the karate tournaments of the day to promote his non competition MA.

:) In '64, karate tournaments were point-fights, not full contact. There were underground fights, but people didn't get their records recorded. Anyway, BL was invited to the first Long Beach International by Ed Parker (who taught kenpo and published a book "Chinese Karate" around that time. Parker appeared in several movies).

Anyway, it's not unusual or unexpected that BL didn't do point fighting. According to Joe Lewis, BL was at least one of the first to promote full-contact karate. Besides, the point is that jkd (nor krav maga, etc) are not designed for competition or sport. Ok, it's not designed for a battlefield, but it's something a soldier could use in cqc. Just like being able to march 10 miles with a 70lb pack.:)

Otoh, yeah, this has a lot of hero worship, so ignore the dialog and skip to the 4:00 mark.

i thought Count Dante was first with full-contact in the US...
(joke) 8-)
about american kenpo...well, i guess it began well with J.Mitose who had some authentic karate training, but later it seem to spin off to something else.
the okinawan teachers of that era whom Mitose probably learned from, might have been the first to experiment with full-contact sparring, equiped with kendo like protectives.
then there is the Kyokushin- kickboxing connection as well as the savate-kickboxing connection, all without any BL

Aw, c'mon, boxing and wrestling have always been full contact :). BL didn't invent it, and nobody needs to bring up Pankration. The one thing that the pro versions lacked was kicking. Sorry, but the number of people in the US who knew (about) savate was way less than those who'd heard of bartitsu (from reading Sherlock Holmes). Many Americans first learned about savate from BL in his Tao of JKD.

It's true that people learned about karate right after the war from returning vets.

you can definitely see it in his use of the oblique kick and eye poke :)

is that the kick directly to knee? seems like UFC/MMA should ban it for sure. those accidental on-purpose eye pokes - no idea how they stop it. even w/o those "negative BL influences", Jones is surely influenced by BL's "less negative" ideas. although I suppose BL said those are "effective" techniques for "fighting".

It's legal as of now. It 's unlikely to get eliminated from the ruleset as it's not normally enough to end a match but I have seen many articles with people asking to ban it (example https://www.fight.tv/post/mastering-the-oblique-kick-jon-jones-and-the-debate-over-its-legality) - but sure, getting punched in the head is probably more deleterious and that won't get banned.

it was originally billed as "no holds barred". a sport based around beating each other up. over time, there have been more rules, but I don't know how they decide where to draw the line.
