Maybe Aikido has some use after all...

Postby Bao on Wed May 01, 2024 7:48 am

Long time ago I read a quote, apparently from Aikido founder Morihei Ueshiba:

"80% of Aikido is striking."

Don't know if it's genuine, but if only 20% or less of the original Aikido remains, what is left still might have some really good use. At least according to what is said here. Do you agree?

If you go back one evolutionary step from Aikido to Daito-Ryu-Jujutsu, supposedly one of its main founding influences, and then move forward along a second evolutionary line you find Hapkido, an art that includes vastly more violence.

Interestingly, “Hap Ki Do” & “Ai Ki Do” are both translations of the same thing: 合氣道, or “He Qi Dao” in Mandarin.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the first few iterations of Aikido were more similar to the old Hapkido.

The main problem with Aikido is most people miss the reason for training it how they do
I know people who could and have used it for real
But even those that use it in a totally fancifull manner gain great value out of the training
Diato Ryu and Hapkido are great martial arts
My son started training Hapkido at 5 because that was the best teacher I could find
Though he stopped training it aided him in every sport he played and in encounters young men have
Don't put power into the form let it naturally arise from the form

All the atemi(striking) is still there, it comes clear if one spend some time training Aikido, and have a good instructor. It’s kind of hidden in plain sight.

The other day I read this interview-

https://aikidojournal.com/2016/09/24/in ... u-ueshiba/

B: How many techniques are there in aikido?
O-Sensei: There are about 3,000 basic techniques, and each one of them has 16 variations… so there are many thousands. Depending on the situation, you create new ones.
I think you advanced taiji’onist know what he mean :)

I'm pretty sure a good martial artist could make the Waltz work as a martial art.

Aikido is fine - it just has the same idiosyncrasies as other Japanese martial arts (uniforms, dojos, ritual, bare feet, etc.).
Striking is used to set up the locks/pins/throws.

I asked if Aikido as present, as it is now, have some real use. The question and topic was totally ignored and the vast majority of the few replies could be summed up with something like "Aikido used to be good".

How interesting... ;D

Like all other MA it depends on the teacher and how it is trained
It has everything to make it work
Don't put power into the form let it naturally arise from the form

Of course aikido has real use, I mean in endeavors in ones regular life. Aikido is not meant to go into the boxing ring or similar, Aikido is meant for the streets………..
for the parks, for the beach, the woods, the mall, one’s home….everywhere except the ring :)

Actually Sweden has strong genuin Aikido tradition of all the major Aikido lines - Aikikai, Saito/Iwama, Nishio, Tohei .

Swedish Aikido pioneers that went to and lived in Japan in the 1960ies to train, even with the founder .
Also during those days Aikikai sent teachers out in the world including Sweden.
One way to find out about Aikido is to actually train in it, and Sweden has quite a few quality Dojos - Why not try one of those :)
