I can't decide if he's really, really, good, or if his students are just making him look good?

Saw this yesterday and found it interesting, especially if you ignor the reaction from the students.

There is also a vid on the channel of him carrying a guy up 'BKF power of internal arts cover' styleee.

cheers

I like his stuff...his thinking is similar to some I li chuan ideas where you want to develop the skill to make them follow you so you can take their center.

True, the students arent going for it with teh realz....but....they do move because Guo is moving them and they cant help it. He baits one side asking for force, they respond to it, then he removes the support and issues on the other side. Very subtle and very skillful.

Hey people, I'm the collar-shirted guy getting flung about in the video. Good to see our YouTube stuff getting some attention.

Josealb: "the students arent going for it with teh realz....but....they do move because Guo is moving them and they cant help it."

Yea, that's just it. Whenever I resist, I get flung - harder and further. At one point in the video, you can see me adjusting down in my stance. Pretty useless. Much training to do.

But do note that, in the video, I was just learning PH (though I've a few years of Xingyi), so I was mostly trying to get the movements right and not-look-stupid on YouTube. Perhaps the more experienced of you would have an easier time. GSL tells us that a few of his senior students (4-5years experience) have very good martial strength (Gongli, i.e. rooting, whole body integration, etc), and, when PHing with them, he needs to use technique and cannot fling them so easily.

I like the video and the explanation of substantial and insubstantial, best I have seen online so far.

Although this brings up an interesting thought to me. You see in places the students being led around like at 6:40. I have always wondered how that happens as I have never had it done to me where I couldn't stop it. It occured to me that part of the rules of puch hands of maintaining contact might be what allows that to happen. When the teacher started to exert the force on the arm the arm can be moved away, I would break contact completely, but with needing to maintain contact in push hands it could make that harder to do because you want to yield without giving up the contact which in that case would be done releasing the wrist and making a small snaking circle counterclockwise with the right hand while maintaining contact with the forearm. Which would be difficult to do if you can't start the movement before your center is disrupted, whereas simply releasing the wrist and moving the arm out is much easier.
