some highlites:

1. Chen Chang Xin was the first recorded teacher. It was called Mian Quan first.

2. Yang Lu Chan saw a person threw a big dude effortlessly at the pharmacy. After some asking people around, Yang learned that the person was from Chen Jia Gou. Yang learned wu shu since young. He was very good at Hong Fist. So he went to Chen Jia Gou to learn. Chen Chang xin asked him to come back later several times, eventually took Yang in.

3. Yang visited and Chen Jia Gou 3 times, meaning it was very difficult to learn.

4. Yang went back to his hometown and was unbeatable there. He was recommended to be a teacher at Zhang family in Beijing. Zhang ran a pickle shop. They provided pickles to Duan Wang (king). Yang showed and surprised Zhang family with his wu shu. He started to teach TJQ at Zhang family. He then was recommended to royal family Duan Wang to teach.

5. During his teaching at the Duan Wang Fu (mansions), Yang was known thruout Bei Jing and the rest of China. Many boxers came and exchanged hands with him.

6. The most famous story/legend was a visit from an over 6 feet tall monk. The monk started a punch to Yang's chest. Yang tucked in his chest and used his hand to intercept and threw him. The second day, the monk's teacher came to visit Yang. The famous tale of a sparrow unable to fly off Yang's palm. There is this saying: one feather may not add to me. one fly may not land on me. It is a figurative speech, just means that TJQ practitioner may listen to Jin and respond accordingly. even to the light weight of a feather or a fly. JUST FIGURATIVELY SPEAKING.

7. Under Duan Wang's permission, Yang started to teach Qi Camp TJQ. From there, and with Yang's wide connection with a lot of people, TJQ was propagated.

8. Tai Ji Quan Lun is the bible/classics. There are 365 characters. It included theory, techniques, how to practice, and how to use them to fight etc.

9. 80 year old Li Jin Wu pushing hand.

10. Li said in TJQ, we may use any part of our body to contact, neutralize and then control the opponent. From body contact or hand contact following zhan nian (stick), we may counter attack.

11. Yang TJ: gentle and slow, substantial and insubstantial are clear; Sun TJ: stepping lightly and flexibly. posture centered and relaxed; Wu TJ; relaxed outside while compacted inside, a needle hidden inside the cotton.

in the second part of the program, there is a very good discussion of 5 elements and 5 fist methods in Xing Yi.

in the third part of the program, a visit to Dong Hai Chuan's tomb by Zhang Quan Liang. Dong->Liang Zhen Pu-> Li Zi Ming->Zhang Quan Liang.

Zhang explained basic principles of Ba Gua Zhang.

overall, it is a very good documentary aired in CCTV just not many days ago in China.

SPJ

Thanks for the trans. Nice little production from what I could see.

But where, or where, are the ethereal skills of yore today?

yes. the program mentioned some tales. but we have take them after the meanings they represented.

1. a sparrow unable to fly off the palm of Yang Lu Chan. is it true or not? I think that it is not true. but it is an example to stress that a TJQ practitioner would strive for yielding, neutralizing, and responding to the force or jin accordingly as if sticking to the opponent, and the opponent is unable to use force on us at all.

do we have this ethereal skill? probably not. but some degree of it, yes.

2. Guo Yun Sheng was jailed due to causing a death by accident. while he was jailed, he was shackled on hands and feet to prevent him from escape. and the schackles with some length were chained to the wall. so he could only move a bit. He practiced his beng quan, by moving the forward foot a step and the rear foot followed half a step. With heavy shackles on hands and feet, he continued to practice. when he finally was pardoned, his hands and feet moved a lot faster and with ease without shackles on. This is the tale of half step beng quan. It is true or not? I think that it is probably true.

do all XYQ practitioners have this skill? maybe with some practice over time, one may attain some degree of it.

--

sometimes, the tales are just to inspire us to practice or aspire to attain a certain level or degree of skills.

and the bottom line is that or the harsh reality is that

if we practice, we may be able to attain some skills.

but if we stop practicing, the skills we once may have would leave us very fast.

3. Dong Hai Chuan was a eunuch and worked as servant in a King's (relatives of the emperor) mansions.

He may carry dishes of food and run around among the tables in the dining room and nobody may catch him. I think this is true. Then the king started to notice his Ba Gua Zhang martial skills. Dong then started to teach members of royal family.

again, the tale is to examplify the stepping/walking skills of Ba Gua.

we do have to take these tales with some grains of salt.

;D

Zhang Quan Liang explained 3 principles of Ba Gua Zhang.

1. Walk to find circles or mai bu xun quan 迈步寻圈

We do not confront the opponent's arm/move or force, we walk away from it. We may contact hand but emtpy there and walk into a position that is advantageous to us.

2. Going away like the water flows. qu yi ru shui 去意如水

We move like the water flows. We go to the side. If the opponent's going at the top level, we may go at mid or low level.

The opponent is using his arm or leg to hit. We find the curved in area, such as near shoulder or hip joint, just like water goes to lower or curved(dipped) in area.

--

3. There are reels all over our body. zhou shen jie zhou 周身皆轴

We may rotate our forearms, the waist etc. We neutralize and deflect the opponent's power and his roots.

--

the main thing/characteristic about the 3 styles of nei jia quan

is change. We have to change or be flexible in every thing we do from stepping, arms, ---

Again, thanks for the trans SPJ.

That last point about definition of the "I" of IMA is very much my understanding - more so than all this talk of qi, body unity, different jins, etc. Don't force your way through or get "stuck" trying to make a technique work - flow with the lines and angles of energy, and change the technique.
