FreedomStyle Martial Yoga

Postby Andy_S on Sun Oct 11, 2009 10:46 pm

I don't do Yoga but I like this chap's exercises. His taiji apps are not bad either. If I were in SA, I'd check him out, even though he admits (gasp!) that Freedomstyle Martial Yoga is his own invention...

FYI, he is the feeder in the Han Yanwu clips that have attracted much favorable comment here recently.

Just didn't understand why it was tagged "Martial Yoga", Like doing a clip on "high Flyin' " and showing a clip of a cloud

Towards the end he does some applications. I guess you didn't watch that far.

Well, "Martial Yoga" is apparently already a trademark...
Although I guess it's technically different from "MartialYoga" as one word.

More marketing... what else is new.

Talented guy, at least as far as athleticism goes.
Ain't no hatha yoga or IMA in what is shown on that clip though, IMHO... :-/

I met this guy when he was in Aus learning under Master Lui de Ming. I met him at a systema class where I had an opportunity to have a play with him. I did not really think much of him, he seemed quite hard to me and I think the apps in that vid reflect the time he has spent doing partner stuff.

But I was very impressed by his flexibility and strength work, makes me feel even fatter and lazier than I already am!

The stuff that's actually based (loosely) on genuine yoga is atrocious. I mean, don't even get me started. This guy doesn't know shit. Follow his stuff and watch your knees explode.

By the way, have you ever noticed how many yoga videos are filmed at the beach? Why do you think that is? It's because it's REALLY easy to do balance poses in the sand to make yourself look like someone who knows yoga (which this guy doesn't). I live in Laguna Beach and yoga videography is a regular industry here with all of the teachers who don't know anything.

My stats: 37 years in yoga; 16 as a certified Iyengar yoga teacher. Study in India, Europe and America with B.K.S. Iyengar, Geeta Iyengar, Pattabhi Jois (Ashtanga), Manouso Manos, Faeq Biria, Patricia Walden, Gabriella Giubilaro, Ramanand Patel and others (Google them, for God's sakes!)

The Martial Yoga guy's stats: He blows.

Please let me know if you think I'm being unkind. Then, go and give your knees, hips and shoulders a hug. They're going to need more than that if you follow this guy's bullshit.

Namaskar, y'all.

KShurika:

Well as you are our resident Yoga expert, I stand corrected, though I thought that was a pretty fair display. Do you know of any peeps who have blended Yoga and MA into a workable whole? The nearest thing I have seen are the Korean Buddhist Temple Martial Arts (Sonmudo, Bulmudo, etc, which seem to be a blend of CMA, Taekkyun, Yoga and Qigong). But as noted, I know squat about Yoga, so this is merely a guess.

(BTW, if anyone posts that appalling kungfu movie clip of the Yogi versus the kungfu guy, I will probably shit a gut. So kindly don't.)
