I am not a huge fan of chest protectors, but I can say first hand that they help cut down on broken ribs if you catch a bad knee or kick. Going all out without gear on in a striking sport is generally for paid fighters.

AFAIK there are no knees allowed in San Shou. As for rib issues....perhaps you should not be fighting in a "FULL CONTACT" sport if rib injuries are feared! Par for the course brother.

Not sure, but I have seen this lack of common sense A LOT on San Shou / San Da fight tapes, and in person. I am not sure what they are instructed to do, but when someone is clearly KO'ed they need to be attended to immediately especially if they end up in a potentially dangerous position! Lack of education and experience is the culprit I am sure. And I promise you there is no solid sanctioning body behind such ref training.
