No fireworks here just an exercise I haven't seen before.

Seems like it could be done with a medicine ball and be useful for push hands.

Fu Zhen Song reportedly use to practice with a 30lb stone ball. Nice to see variations of traditional weight resistance exercises.

One of the old guys from Chen village (as in generations ago) was famous for doing this set with a ball that weighed over 70 lbs. Even 30 is no joke. Try holding a 30 lb weight at arm's length in front of you with your feet shoulder width and without leaning forward or back. Then try to relax dantien. It takes pretty decent lengthening of the spine to do this, IME.

I've experimented with moving very light (4-8 lb) medicine balls in similar ways. can't imagine doing these with 30 or 70 lb balls. but then I can't imagine using 50-80+ lb kettlebells either, especially one per hand

He is using a 30 lb ball in the vid.
That is a great set - nothing is as good as the type of ball
he has there. It is hollow made out of sintered iron - I think.
His is also pretty cool cause it has silver sparkle in the black finish.
Any one know where I can get one of those balls.
He also promotes the ruler - a little 45 degree bend handle
thing to train chin na neutralization. He is supposed to be the
number one guy for neutralization.

Roger,

I cast mine in concrete and it weighs 32 lbs. It would probably be easier for most people to just get a basketball and fill it with playground sand. If you want to go heavier, you can mix in lead shot to reach the desired weight. Of course, if you mostly want one like he has for the awesomeness factor, then I guess I can't help you...

I'm not surprised. If you do stuff like people will have hard time pushing you.

The funny thing is that if you did this in most taiji parks in the West you'd get people saying, "That's not taiji."

Interesting how the hardcore taiji training has a hard time making it abroad.

Ken Cohen suggested over 20 years ago in an Inside Kung Fu article doing tai chi ruler exercises with a bowling ball. If I remember correctly he suggested doing 32 rotations in front of each of the three tan tiens. Got used bowling ball for a dollar at a yard sale. Owner seemed happy just to be rid of it. Definitely good workout.

when i have an uneven number of students,we either practice what i call 3 man randori or i put the bowling ball on a table and teach them a series of pushing exercises with the ball.
