Agreed, and guilty in some instances. I really do think a lot of what passes for discussion and investigation is negated by the application of labels, but with fear vs sanity these comedians really capture what the key question is now for all people in western regions (if we want to maintain some sort of leadership role in the world). The nation state is being dissolved very slowly, but surely and as this identity is attacked people need a new one. I would suggest all people have two direct choices, either
follow the fear route and balkanise the whole damn world. Group ourselves using Religious, colour, political leanings , language, ethnicity naked capitalism etc
go the sane route and start adopting a global grouping. Things such as environmentalism, mutually beneficial global economics and even weird memes like fear of alien invasion
point to the areas where we could create a global consciousness.
That is a debate worth having, and we could include all of the contentious issues within that framework. I know Machiavelli, my favourite author, would slap me and say the fear route is the only one that works, but perhaps with weaker nation states via globalisation, and moving towards a single consciousness where we are actually aware of the consequences of what we do, fear doesn't make much sense.
Ok it is monday morning so I suspect this post may not make much sense.
