"Cumha na Cloinne" (Lament for the Children) by Patrick Mor MacCrimmon (1595-1670), considered by many the finest Piobaireachd composition ever written for the Great Highland Bagpipe. It's said he wrote it following the death of seven of his eight sons in a single year.

My grandmother was a fierce Macleod, born in Skye in 1880 near Dunvegan Castle, seat of Clan Macleod for whom the MacCrimmons were hereditary pipers for over 200 years. One really needs to hear this music in its original setting to feel its full emotional impact.

Here ye go bonnie lad.

Traditional fightin' music: "The Black Bear" - best listened to with Claymore in hand, tattered banner overhead and a column of French infantry to your front

'The Gael' by Royal Scot Dragon Guards. A bit neo-traditional and over-produced at the start, but give it time; it gets better wi' the pipes n' drums

And 'Highland Cathedral' here:

Latter piece is the best Scottish muzak ever written by a Jerry.

Quote from the book I am working now:
In the midst of the great Chinese winter offensive of Nov 1950, 1st Argylls are tasked to night march 30 miles up a pass, through enemy-held mountains, fight through a roadblock and set up positions to the south.
Enemy strength: Unknown.
"We led off with the pipers playing," said Captain John Slim. "The locals loved it - and it let the enemy know we were coming."
Services available:
Pies scoffed. Ales quaffed. Beds shat. Oiks irked. Chavs chinned. Thugs thumped. Sacks split. Arses goosed. Udders ogled. Canines consumed. Sheep shagged.Matrons outraged. Vicars enlightened. PM for rates.

When I lived in Ocean Beach I used to go t sleep every weekend night hearing the bag pipes from afar. Years later I finally met the gent that played them and was able to thank him. I loved it.. He was so far away but yet the sound carried through the night air like a ghost whispering in the wind - beautiful!
