Teddy Roosevelt o.g. MMA

T.R. was ahead of his time. He studied Boxing, Judo , and Wrestling.

From wiki- Roosevelt had a lifelong interest in pursuing what he called, in an 1899 speech, "the strenuous life". To this end, he exercised regularly and took up boxing, tennis, hiking, rowing, polo, and horseback riding. As governor of New York, he boxed with sparring partners several times a week, a practice he regularly continued as President until one blow detached his left retina, leaving him blind in that eye (a fact not made public until many years later). Thereafter, he practiced judo attaining a third degree brown belt and continued his habit of skinny-dipping in the Potomac River during winter

regardless the guy was a bad ass here he talks about competing, this is in one of my BJJ coaches gi.

It's a well-known anecdote that Roosevelt "imported" a jujutsu instructor from Japan to teach him some "jiujitsu tricks." I have a book about the guy, somewhere. Apparently, the JJ guy found Teddy to be rambunctious and given to roughhousing, and that he would get all excited about a new "sport," but then train just enough to be able to do a few things tolerably well, then lose interest. He was the picture of the big, bluff American male. ;)

Having gotten a detached retina as a consequence of MA training, I can attest to the wonderful advances in medical knowledge and skill that have made outcomes today different from those of Roosevelt's time. My retina was restored after 3-and-a-half hours of surgery by a fantastic ophthalmic surgeon, using methods that 19th-century and even mid-20th-century medical experts couldn't even imagine.

affa,
Besides meaning to fake, trick or feint, or a cliff or precipice, the word "bluff" also means outspoken and good-naturedly straightforward or blunt in expressing opinions. That' latter definition is the one I was using. :)
