Django Unchained

Postby Darthwing Teorist on Fri Jan 25, 2013 5:46 pm

Is this movie any good? I love westerns and I like Jamie Fox and Leonardo DiCaprio as actors. I am wondering if Tarantino made a movie that lives up to my expectations or just an OK one. I am not going too often to the movies (tomorrow I will see the Hobbit, so that gives you an idea). I want to see this movie but I would like to know if it is worth it.

Dunno. Haven't seen it yet. It's a Tarantino movie, so ... I'm expecting it to be a Tarantino movie. Afa the subject matter, a serious movie about the period of American slavery is usually a documentary. Personally, since I'm a lit teacher, I think if the time period were changed and the characters were all the same color, I think it'd be received differently. Spike Lee, as you probably know, says that he will not see the film because it is disrespectful. I dunno. I understand the complaint about the use of the n-word; but, could a film be made about S. Africa during apartheid, would the k-word (kaffir) be removed?

I figure I could stomach the technicolor blood baths of "Kill Bill" Vols. 1 and 2, so Tarantino's Django should be similarly okay.

I guess that as far as language and situational racism go, Steve, you have a point. Do we gloss over and euphamize the truth to make things prettier and less disturbing? I think that would diminish the impact of the truths (however over-the-top they're represented) Tarantino is setting forth. Heck, I think that the movie version of "Schindler's List" whitewashed a lot about the Shoah. On the other hand, too much can have the effect of being so disturbing that people don't want to watch the rest of the movie, or try their best to forget what they saw because it is just too much to bear.

Saw is last Tuesday, it was excellent, in many ways. Not as cartoonishly gory like the Kill Bills, but... spectacular enough :), great characters, clean well-written plot... Loads of fun. FWIW

It is about a slave who escapes captivity through a German immigrant seeking the man who murdered a family member!
The German teachs Django the skills necessary to earn a living, be faithful to the law and in the meanwhile look for plans to free his bethrothed 8-)
Django knows how to handle a horse! The movie is about good, evil and Divine Intervention of freedom and justice for all who can weild a gun. Do I hear 2nd Amendment?

The Franco Nero cameo scene alone makes it worth it. Quality stuff.
