Not quite.
The crown of England used to mandate days of thanksgiving in Canada until the late 1800's. The problem is that they were never put on uniform dates. So some Canadians got the idea that there should be one consistent day of thanks every year.
We basically copied the American tradition, but put our thanksgiving closer to harvest. The only differences between out thanksgiving and the merkin one is that we don't have foot ball and we aren't actually celebrating any event.
