Breaking News:

Russian opposition leader Nemtsov shot dead in Moscow

Reuters 2 hours ago

By Alexander Winning

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Boris Nemtsov, a Russian opposition politician and former deputy prime minister who was an outspoken critic of President Vladimir Putin, was shot dead meters from the Kremlin in central Moscow late on Friday.

Nemtsov, 55, was shot four times in the back, the Interior Ministry said. A police spokeswoman on the scene said he had been walking on a bridge over the Moskva River with a Ukrainian woman.

Putin condemned the killing and took the investigation under presidential command, saying it could have been a contract killing and a "provocation" on the eve of a big opposition protest that Nemtsov had been due to lead in Moscow on Sunday.

Police cars sealed off the bridge close to the red walls of the Kremlin and Red Square, and an ambulance was on the scene.

"Nemtsov B.E. died at 2340 hours as a result of four shots in the back," an Interior Ministry spokeswoman said by telephone.

A police spokesman on the scene said Nemtsov had been shot at from a passing white car that fled the scene. The woman was being interviewed by police.

Mikhail Kasyanov, a fellow opposition leader, told reporters at the bridge: "That a leader of the opposition could be shot beside the walls of the Kremlin is beyond imagination. There can be only one version: that he was shot for telling the truth."

Kasyanov, a former prime minister under Putin, called Nemtsov a "fighter for the truth".

OPPOSITION TO WAR IN UKRAINE

Nemtsov had been quoted as saying he was concerned that the president might want him dead over his opposition to the conflict in Ukraine. Sunday's opposition march is intended as a protest against the war in east Ukraine, where pro-Russian rebels have seized a swathe of territory.

Putin's spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, told Russian news agencies that the president had expressed his condolences and ordered the security agencies to investigate. He said Putin had called it a "brutal murder".

Another opposition figure, Ksenia Sobchak, said Nemtsov had been preparing a report on the presence of Russian troops in Ukraine. The Kremlin strongly denies allegations by Kiev and Western capitals that it has sent troops and advanced weaponry to back the rebels.

Peskov said Putin had called it a "brutal murder".

Like other opposition leaders, Nemtsov was a fighter against corruption. In other reports, he condemned massive overspending on the Sochi Winter Olympics by the Russian authorities and listed the many state buildings, helicopters and planes that Putin has at his disposal.

Nemtsov was also one of the leaders of mass rallies in the winter of 2011-12 that became the biggest protests against Putin since the former KGB spy rose to power in 2000.

Nemtsov briefly served as a deputy prime minister under president Boris Yeltsin in the late 1990s, when he gained a reputation as a leading liberal reformer.

It Bridge close to Kremlin /where the shooting was placed/. There are lots of cameras , and even more special agents.
Last info /view from one of the camera/ - he was shot by two guys hidden on the bridge stairs. They was simply waiting, and small car was waiting close to scene to pick them up.
Scene of the shooting was cover by the big "city utility car", which stops exactly on the camera view line in the time of the shooting ...
next a small car appear from the back, picked two guys and that`s all.
Two another guys running away on foot, are /probably/ F.S.B. agents - they observed Nemtsov all the time.

this is quite different version than official police rapport, so far.

Nemtsov had been openly condemning the war in Ukraine as Russian aggression and bad for his country.

He also slammed President Putin over his claims that Russia does not have troops in Ukraine.

I offer this for context and practical comparison.

Sixty years later, USA is considering easing the crippling sanctions on Cuba, following decades of terror attacks we conducted there and sth. like 600 assassination attempts on Castro, not to mention the Monroe Doctrine and the existence of a US military base in a country who did not invite its presence, a base where we keep the world's most famous torture dungeon.

Let's say for the sake of argument that the FSB, or even Putin, ordered Nemtsov's murder, then compare it to the 1962 Operation Northwoods where Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff Lemnitzer approved a plan to shoot down USA passenger jets and bombs US cities, from Miami to D.C., and then blame it on Cuba as a pretext for war to get Castro and revert Cuba to a company-island for US sugar plantation and casino interests. I could go on and on with NATO terror across Europe from that time since.

Image

In case this still needs to be spelled out, a tiny country like Cuba has been constantly under attack by the USA, in one form or another, for having domestic policies and military assistance viewed as a threat to the USA. Why shouldn't Russia be expected to have its own sphere of influence on its borders to be free from NATO? This transcends Putin and playing internet gumshoe about who killed Nemstov.

When did anyone ever say the world should follow the US' s example?

The irony is if Obama had John Boehner assassinated everyone on this board would be all over this.

As In said before I am consistent in my criticism of any government.

Anyway I'm sure people will blame the CIA before long

You mean the Koch brothers :), specifically, but political opponents in general. The real irony is how republicans praised Putin for his decisiveness and leadership, and how bad he made Obama look in comparison. And, the joke in that is that the same republicans will claim that Obama is a dictator --who should do more about Russia in the Ukraine, ISIL in the ME, and immigrants here --with their consent.

But, of course, Michael is right that the "US" is no newbie to political assassinations. It's just not the same to compare the "US-UN-UK-West" to the actions of a single politician. Otoh, I'm sure that many Muslims would agree that Obama has killed more of them than Putin has killed his political enemies.

The USA is leading the opposition to Russia and instigating sanctions / economic warfare against them, so it is a hypocritical policy of theirs. Since the USA is in this position, the condemnation of Russia is an implied approval of the US policies and joining the hypocrisy to a certain extent.

I've heard that tired argument thousand times living abroad that if the US does it everyone can do it and all I can say is it sounds like a cop out to me and it's especially sad to hear from people who are aware of the evils of the US.

This is also why I can't take conspiracy theories seriously, because when you have a real conspiracy like this assassination It's ignored because it can't be pinned on the US. But people can believe what they wish and I mean that sincerely, I just can't figure out why Putin always gets a free pass.

Meanwhile in Moscow they have to live in Putin's reality.

I don't say that because the US does it, anyone can do it. I believe the opposite, which is why I say the US policy against Russia is hypocritical in regard to Ukraine, considering Cuba and other topics.

By the way, the Russians haven't had much influence in Cuba for a long time now and if it weren't for the Republicans who are still opposed to opening relations with the island nation the US probably would have lifted the embargo long ago.

Apparently, some hopeful talks are under way right now to normalize relations with Cuba. I hope it goes well as I think the US policy for Cuba the past 40-50 years is a serious mistake and doing nothing but harm to the Cuban people.

Considering globalization and US-China relations, I can't imagine how an economic embargo against Cuba can be held up even under false pretenses of Cuba being a state sponsor of terrorism. Now there's some hypocrisy.
