Steve Jobs said in an interview that all the HD camcorders from the last 2 years were all USB, not FireWire. That's all the rational Apple gave.
I think dropping FireWire was a bit insane, and it will probably come back to bite them, but it was also very Apple - they dropped the floppy disk way before anyone else with the iMac, and that did them no harm.
That's no consolation to you if you have a perfectly good FireWire hard disk or camcorder you can no longer use though... also no more booting into FireWire Target Disk mode, but Apple has put some sort of network boot option in to make up for that.
