Great stuff. I must say, I am well impressed by the Polish knightly combats, all jolly good stuff. The Russian Village fights - well. We used to have similar things in England - they were the origin of football - but they had died out by the 19th century. Glad to see the Russians are maintaining their, er, "culture."

The one I was expecting to see was that Italian blend of football and mass brawling - do you know the sport I mean? Can't remember the name. Anyway, great article.

And the shoulder throw by the chap in the Russian Village Fight was possibly the best throw I have ever seen live.

Said game of fighting and football is 'calcio storico' ... saw a documentary on it recently! Crazyness and a bunch of mighty hard dudes.

I recall reading a biography of Stalin that described the Russian brawls, which took place in the Spring - apparently he was very fond of taking part in the mayhem....
