outbreak

Postby windwalker on Sun Oct 05, 2014 12:28 am

The film focuses on an outbreak of a fictional Ebola-like virus :o called Motaba in Zaire and later in a small town in the United States. Its primary settings are government disease control centers USAMRIID and the CDC, and the fictional town of Cedar Creek, California. Outbreak's plot speculates how far military and civilian agencies might go to contain the spread of a deadly contagion.

considering the recent events in the US.
the CDC, telling us that they have it under control ::)

why are we sending up to 4000 solders there

As Obama administration officials sought to reassure Americans about efforts to contain Ebola in the wake of the first U.S. case, the military announced Friday that an additional 1,000 troops could be sent to West Africa to help fight the virus.]

dont quite get it :-\ they even acknowledge the fact that some will catch the virus

The strength of the U.S. health care system "would make it extraordinarily unlikely that we would have an outbreak" in this country, Fauci said.

yep, extraordinarily :-\

I dont understand why for the gen public, they dont have a quarantine place where a person would remain for
a certain period before being allowed to travel on, given the fact that it has no known cure as of yet and there appears
to be some questions regarding ways of transmission.

our "extraordinary" medical system may be,,,for the 1%
of the ones with the means to make it so....

Well, several thousand people die from the flu every year. Then, there's the enterovirus that hundreds of children are catching. But, afa ebola, it can't be caught like the flu --or else everyone in Western Africa would have it and masks and rubber suits wouldn't do any good. There are also people who have developed immunity, and the thought now is that their blood can be used to make a vaccine. Of course, if the medical system is mistrusted in general, then no one will believe they can't get ebola. They will then panic, just like people did in the 80s when it came to AIDS. Yet, the only people who will do any good in this mess are medical workers, and they are the ones most at risk for being infected.

Panic is worse than the disease. Ever watch "Z" or "Walking Dead"?

Authorities in Dallas are searching for a homeless person who might have had contact with the lone Ebola patient diagnosed in the United States, officials said Sunday.

panic, why should anyone panic, they have the situation well under control, we have the best medical care
that money can buy.

of course, you got to have the money

The people who aren't panicking have themselves under control, not the virus. Of course, panic doesn't give one more control.

Frieden said he was confident the disease would not spread widely within the United States. U.S. officials are also scaling up their response in West Africa, where Ebola presents an enormous challenge, he added.

I guess this is supposed to be the good news for an incurable virus, that kills within days.

Well, maybe it's time to become self-informed about how the virus is transmitted, or how it has been proven to be transmitted, instead of panicking because it exists.

kinda the point.

the way its transmitted is not as clear as they would have us believe.
in order not start a "panic"
its not in their interest to let the
public know.

saying we have it under control and we can handle it.
when clearly they do not, and as what just happened we can not.
remember they started off by implying it would not be able to come here.

the safest course of action would have been some type of
quarantine for people coming here from affected regions,
within the region itself.

with as much press and information as this has had, what happened
in Texas should never have happened.

why is it, that we tend to treat animals better then humans.
try taking a dog or cat to HI for example. they will quarantine it for certain period of time
before allowing it free reign on the islands.

imo, this should have been handled the same way, offering some type of control
instead of what seems to be none ,,maybe this will change

also selecting a site or hops, where all cases would be sent to instead of all over the US.
would offer more control and consistency of treatments or studies.

dosnt make much sense to allow infected people to go to different hosp in different places.

Oh, so you're saying that you've read other studies that indicate other modes of transmission than the ones "they" would have us believe? And, you give more credence to them because ... they have demonstrated it ... or because they've said it? And, because of what they've said, you feel that you're at risk. I don't know why, since your studies should have informed you of the actual manner of transmission. How do you believe it's transmitted, anyway? It would make us all feel more secure to know.

Alas, I think it's more likely that a panic will start from rumors spread by "sources" (who claim that the ebola threat is being minimized to prevent a panic) than by the virus itself. Obviously, those are most panicky are those with the least information about how the virus (or many others) is transmitted. So, I don't believe that the ones who worry have any sort of answers except more worry and are the biggest danger.

what ever ::)

In laboratory settings, non-human primates exposed to aerosolized ebolavirus from pigs have become infected, however, airborne transmission has not been demonstrated between non-human primates Footnote 1 Footnote 10 Footnote 15 Footnote 44 Footnote 45. Viral shedding has been observed in nasopharyngeal secretions and rectal swabs of pigs following experimental inoculation Footnote 29 Footnote 30.

http://www.phac-aspc.gc.ca/lab-bio/res/ ... la-eng.php

point being that they didn't experiment on humans to prove it.

my point was that they have not demonstrated the control or ability contain it so far
that they claim they have, either here or in infected regions other then by quarantining the affected regions.
nor do they have an established effective cure or vaccine yet.

you feel its ok to allow infected people to travel here, for treatment, cool
i dont.

fwiw: the basic function of the gov is to protect its people
by taking the prudent courses of action. so far IMO this has not been the case.
looking for some homeless person, who may or may not be infected
not a real confidence builder

hope they find him or her, and that they find no infection.

:) So, because in a laboratory, they could infect monkeys with aerosolized ebolavirus proves the point that "the way its transmitted is not as clear as they would have us believe." Seems exactly the opposite, actually. Iow, they "know" how they can infect monkeys in a lab, and they say that it has not been demonstrated on monkeys outside of a lab.

And the point can't be that they didn't experiment on humans because no scientist can ethically "experiment" on a human by exposing that person to aerosolized ebola just to see if it could happen in a lab. Moreover, even if they did, it would not prove anything about how humans could be infected with ebola outside of a lab.

Now, if your argument is that ebola and HIV are government experiments gone awry, fair enough.

you feel its ok to allow infected people to travel here, for treatment, cool i dont.

Ya missed the sunglass smiley, but the above comment is straight out of Schopenhauer's list ;)

But, as to your point, I suppose you don't believe that doctors or medical workers should go to affected areas. And, since most of the infected are in Texas, we could sort of quarantine the state. Seriously, though, I hope no one in your building comes down with it. Then, it's concentration camp time for you.

Texas? sure ;) what are they waiting for. seems like In West Africa. they implemented some travel restrictions.

back in the 70s worked on iso wards while in the US Army overseas have you worked with or
cared for anyone in an isolation unit ?

British Airways and some other airlines have suspended flights from those countries, and overall traffic to and from the affected areas has dropped. Rep.

Tim Murphy plans to conduct hearings on the policy this coming week. He leads the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations. Asking travelers to report their own activities at airports "has been a demonstrated failure, and it is nearly impossible to retrace steps to try and track down everyone who has been in contact with a carrier taking multiple international flights across the globe," Murphy, a Pennsylvania Republican, said Friday.

U.S. officials have emphasized that the United States has a modern medical system that is far better equipped to contain an outbreak than the African countries where Ebola is currently spreading.

http://www.nbcnews.com/storyline/ebola- ... an-n218951

which has failed the fist time out, despite mass media coverage. wouldn't it be better to work on preventing it from being transported here instead of relying on an assumption that has already proven to have failed in many areas.

what is the over all national need that requires our military to be put in harms way?
with the expectation that some of them will catch the virus.
but dont worry we have the most modern medical system in the world.
