I'm intrigued . . . what do the different stages entail? When I gave skydiving a go 30 odd years ago you did a 2 hour pre-jump course, half a dozen tethered jumps and then were let loose at 10,000 feet :-)

i am just a beginner, but as i understand it
in the different stages you must be able to demonstrate that
you are able to stably control your movements during freefall.

eg forward, backward, turn left/right...
a guy in stage 6 or 7 was tested on his ability to do backflip in the air.

that's as far as i understand it, cheers :D

Not as ridiculous as it may sound. I remember when training we were told if there's something you don't want to land on e.g. fence, tree, power line etc. then don't look at it because you tend to head towards what you look at. One idiot in our group ignored this and fixated on the one small muddy pond sitting in the middle of acres and acres of beautiful empty field that comprised our landing zone and you guessed it he landed slap bang splash right in the middle of it. So yeah he missed the ground.

Could have been worse. A British para during a NATO exercise in (IIRC) Denmark some years ago missed his DZ and landed in a pen full of war dogs. By the time the handlers reached him, all that was left were a few bloody rags.

Sounds like James Bond in "Faces of Death Part VIII"

Everyone knows that whatever goes up, must also come down. However, some people fail to realize that it's not the fall that kills you, but the sudden stop at ground level when your parachute doesn't deploy. From H.A.L.O. to halo in a heartbeat! :o :-\

Don't you use an aad for your reserve? :) Anyway, I'm jealous. What does your wife think?

yes we have a CIpres AAD for student's parachute.
but the idea is that you are the "safety"; you should not rely on the AAD to do the job; unless you are unconscious or somehow not able to pull.

don't have one.
chief instructor seems to like that
he said "otherwise she's gonna say 'don't go to australia and skoidoive; stay here with meh"

:) Well, yes, the jumper is ultimately responsible for his own safety. Did they make you fold your own chutes, too?
Side note, an old friend of mine is/was? a master jumper. He did that first jump off the WTC, which is considered the first BASE jump. That was in '77, iirc.

Oh yeah, having a wife and kids can be a real deterrent --at least the wife can often be :).
