Shooting at the Canadian Parliament

Postby Kevin_Wallbridge on Wed Oct 22, 2014 10:10 pm

It is easy to mock the pomp of the Canadian parliament with its trappings of English, as opposed to American, democracy. Still, when a gunman (who had just murdered a Canadian soldier standing honour guard at the National Memorial across the street) entered the building today and was brought down by gunfire, the man behind the trigger was the old grey haired fellow who carries the ceremonial mace, the Sergeant at Arms. Kevin Vickers shot the gunman in the centre block of Parliament in the part known as The Hall of Heroes.

Here is a photo of Cpl. Nathan Cirillo of the Argyle and Sutherland Highlanders minutes before he was killed. The Parliament grounds are visible in the background. Godspeed

Wow... Heard the story on a seemingly endless loop today at lunch, but no mention the defending shooter wasn't a cop. In fact the story was that police had shot him. Gonna have to google it.

If this was USA the pic of the soldier would be viral. Interesting to see what comes of the victim soldier that lost his life.

Tragic. Condolences to the family and loved ones of the soldier.

A true Hero in the true sense of the word!
I also saw some reports that he is a retired RCMP and he was put there by a greater Power as he prevented a potential blood bath.

Yes, he is retired RCMP. The Sergeant at Arms is actually the official head of security for the House of Commons.

Our man Russell Brand comments on the shooting. I never much cared for Brand as a comedian, but rather enjoy his social commentary.

Glad to see his training did not fail him when things got bad. Good thing for everyone that he was there.

Here is an interesting take on this incident, and the one before it, in Canada: click
