Michael

there are some temples right off the blue line metro
like long shan temple
get off at long shan temple station -- hahaha
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mengjia_Longshan_Temple

there are some temples in the mountains - neihu district where i live
one of them is bishan temple
http://www.taipeitravel.net/frontsite/e ... 1800000285

there are also a bunch of hiking trails here in neihu
all over the place
basically if you see a mountain you can just go on the road nearby and find some signs and find a hiking trail

you could go biking along the rivers
there are nice riverside parks
and i think they have places where you can rent bikes

of course you have 228 park
or chiang kai shek memorial
if you want to go in the mornings and check out people practicing...

there is also Daan park (they call it forest park-- but it looks like regular park type trees to me and not so much a forest... but thats just my opinion)
and Sun Yat Sen memorial...

are you guys coming this weekend?
and what part of the city are you staying at?

if you got extra time or want to hang out
send me a PM

I returned this morning from a wonderful trip to Taipei and I can't say enough good things about the city and the people. I will write something in the next couple of days that is adequate to describe what a wonderful place it is and especially how warm, open, friendly, and helpful the local people are. :-* <3

Thanks a lot Franklin and Greg for the suggestions. -woot-

That's awesome Michael, glad you had such a good time!
Taipei is top of my list in Asia, my good friend went there a couple years ago on business and loved it.
I would seriously be interested in an RSF meet up some time when you plan to be back there.

Glad you liked it there Michael. It's definitely a nice change from the mainland, also getting American cable TV channels is nice too.

My experience mirrors yours. The people were also nice and polite. I especially enjoyed the experience of Chinese culture. I saw people burning paper money to the ancestors and even saw dragon dancing complete with drums, things I don't believe I experienced walking down the street in the mainland. Not to say that the mainland isn't fascinating but as a westerner Taiwan is easier to appreciate and I love the food.

It would be a nice place to retire for fans of Chinese culture.

Yes, for sure. Could also be a nice place to go under any circumstances to see some Chinese culture. Beats the hell out of Hong Kong, too.

Yes, I love the episode of Anthony Bourdain's show where he goes to Taiwan; I already wanted to go there before seeing that, but the food was icing on the cake for me. ;)

Yep, that has occurred to me as well.
