The gunman has been identified. An Iranian cleric who seems to be ideologically even more messed up than those IS dudes.

So he's done this as a protest for Australia's involvement in the bombing of Iraq - how long will it be before 'radicalize christians' say "this is why we need to get rid of those guys"...? (because they're demonstrating they're upset of the occupation/bombing in their land). This whole thing sounds like "we need to kill them because they killed one guy after we bombed 100 of theirs..". I don't support either side but if this thread goes in the direction of many Facebook posts, that'll be the direction this topic goes.

I have often thought how easy it would be for one of the more radical groups out there to just declare a fatwa and tell all Muslim youths to rise up against the West. Now this will not have the effect intended directly yet the more stupid amongst the non-Muslim population (and Muslims) might just start attacking Muslim folk (or non-Muslim or anyone who looks "foreign") randomly. Thus creating a situation where fear breeds fear on a greater level than now! Hopefully this sort of idiocy will not happen or we may see armed forces more regularly on the streets.

This dude was just a mentally ill con man. He thought he was ISIS but took another Jihadi group's flag to the cafe.

Bad situation in Sydney and I was wondering when IS would open up another front, rather than sticking to fighting a conventional, old-fashioned war (ie for territory) in the Middle East. Though now it looks like this murderer was not even affiliated to these kind and gentle souls.

But compare Martin Plaza to the bloodbath in Peshawar and....well.

Pakistan has taken enormous flak during the GWOT and often gets blamed. But clearly, the problem Pakistan has with terrorism dwarves that facing any Western society. Deliberately targeting children? At school? What utter savagery. The international community really needs to get serious about what has been and is going on in Pakistan, rather than simply treating is as collateral to Afghan.

And those angry young Muslims who think that having their passports confiscated is an inexcusable breach of their human rights had better recognize the colossal difference between the injustice of the Canberra authorities versus the shear fucking barbarity of the Taliban hardcore.

seriously, from the start the free world has got this wrong.
they want an islamic state/caliphate and call themselves ISIS.
then you call them ISIS an splash their name in all the frontpages of major newspaper.
when did we start "listening" to the terrorists and giving them "airtime"
and letting them have legitimacy/notoriety in mainstream mass media.

this guy in sydney is not a terrorist; he is a serial sex offender
who think he is a terrorist.

ISIS using social media to spread their message of terror and false islam.
what? the social media belong to them now? wtf man! pass a law to mandate
the immediate shutdown; track and arrest all posters.
or send in a predator and drop a bunker buster. end the story.
i would like to see how they spread their msg.

yeah moderate clerics and religious leader "condemn" such terror acts openly.
its good for a start.
but understand this; "condemning" is a "negative"
ISIS is fighting an ideological war and well as a physical one.
why stop at condemning?
come out an spread true islam; say how true islam tolerant and kind
tell the world the true meaning of jihad.
tell the world how the terrorists have gravely misunderstood and subverted the islam's true teachings.

wtf man?? i have to teach you how the heck to counter-attack??
feck man, you'se better start dialling you shit WAY up!
or more innocent are gonna die for nothing.

This guy was just a crazy terrorist wannabe but regarding the bigger picture of terrorism I think it's just going to get worse. The so called moderate Muslims don't have enough logical reasons based on the Islamic teachings to win a debate against the extremists. If they condemn the barbaric actions like genocide, rape, slavery, stoning, ... they are condemning what their prophet and the early Muslims also did and if they say what the prophet did 1400 years ago was just for that harsh place and time then it means that their religion as it was practiced by their prophet wasn't the most complete religion (which is an essential belief in Islam). The only reasons that they can use against some of the actions that were clearly practiced at the beginning of Islam is by referring to the modern secular values outside of Islam but if they do that it again means that Islam wasn't the most complete religion at the time it was sent. So there is always going to be Muslims who get attracted to extremism as the natural result of the way the ideology was designed. They are a minority but certainly big enough to cause serious damage and as it seems they are growing in number.
This ideological war causes a few incidents from time to time in the west but rarely anything serious. On the other hand the Muslim world is the biggest loser and is stuck in this paradox for eternity. I think as long as they don't pose any serious danger to the west, it is possible to assume that there are corporations making profit out of this chaos.
Education, social welfare, ... isn't going to solve Islamic terrorism and as we see many of these terrorists come from rich countries with good education background. The only way to solve the problem is by solving the paradox.
