Desirable Maidens Throughout History: Figure Comparison

I say! Interesting study here, chaps.

My preferences appear to combine Classic Greek and Renaissance Babe with a touch of affection for Golden Age Hollywood.

They got the Hollywood years (1930 -1950) completely wrong.

As for my tastes - Bridget Bardot and Monica Belucci

Oh gawd. Down boy.

In case any mods see this:

My OP was (and is) perfectly innocent. The two posters steaming up this thread are both getting on a bit in years, so be kind...

Andy, don't be too quick to judge without sufficient evidence. I think they should post more so it can be evaluated by the court.

at the risk of sounding like a sinophile, I don't know why they used Han dynasty as a Chinese ideal, when Tang dynasty women are generally more well depicted in fine art. Tang dynasty chicks had a bit of extra meat, and as far as I can tell, it is the only period of Asian history when women were allowed to do that.

as for an ideal,
I love em all.

but especially my dear old mum.

I have a cousin who works in the fashion industry in LA and occasionally posts photos of some of the models she works with, on her Facebook page. Every one of the models resembles the photos I've seen on world aid sites of malnourished children in undeveloped countries, and of WWII concentration-camp survivors photographed shortly before liberation. They are absolutely skeletal, sunken-eyed (made even more visible by dark eye makeup) and forlorn-looking.

How this became the "norm" for beauty in the current fashion- and modeling world is beyond comprehension. :P

From the 'net -- My guess is that the global economic near-depression has had a strong influence on the fashion industry, to the point of nihilism. Can't come up with any other reason for this. That would explain the minimalist clothing, too. Looking at trends from WWI to now, in times of economic depression and recession, hemlines rise and clothes get skimpier due to the cost and lesser availability of fabric and other textiles.

This is a freakin' Ralph Lauren model. Sheesh. The models for his designs used to be robust outdoorsy ones...

I mean, what's wrong with this? Is it wrong to have some flesh? She's curvy and pretty. :)

Definitely a healthier image than these:

Playboy shows what men want to see.
Fashion show runways are what women want to see.

I think it's more that the fashion industry manipulates and distorts what constitutes "beauty" and glamour, in the minds of women, and thus dictates to them what they "want" to see.

There might be more "global" things dictating these trends; I think "the fashion industry" is not the "originator" of trends, but the "implementer" or them. Those trends are probably more driven by biological (demographic, cultural, etc.), economic and other factors than by what some 'fashion guru' decides should be fashionable next season. What I mean is that their very "decisions" are implicitly influenced by a bunch of subtle (and some not-so-subtle) factors that are hard, if not impossible, to account for in their entirety.

IOW, I don't think fashion industry "manipulates" the minds of women; I think they change together, as part of some "global" processes.
