looking for a good minimal shoe?

Postby ashe on Fri May 20, 2016 10:48 am

I know a lot of the peeps here are into the fei yue shoes. I don't like them myself. It's hard to find them in a US 13 and they feel high centered to me, which a) conflicts with the ILC shenfa and b) It bothers my plantar fascia, so I'm always on the look out for a good minimal shoe. We had a guest from TN as part of our ILC workshop in AZ recently and he was wearing the NB Minimus, so I asked him to review them for my YouTube channel. Prince is a well known kettlebell instructor and personal trainer in the Nashville area.

Sorry about the Blair Witch shaky cam. My daughter usually runs my camera and she was really struggling with holding the camera at the right angle to keep it from being back lit...

Hi Ashe, have you heard of these?

I have a pair, and a few MA friends all like them, nice and wide, not too chunky as sole.

As recommended by Chris (middleway) - I've been using lems shoes for the past few years.

I have SUPER wide feet, with massive arches.. almost no shoes fit me well, but lems are amazing, incredibly comfortable and for a minimal shoe, surprisingly durable

2nd the Lems. I have same problems too. My 2nd pair seems to have super short laces for some reason though.

I think I have heard of them before, but haven't had any direct experience with them. They have a ton of models though!

Thanks for that. That gives me a much better idea of how to improve (though in retrospect it should have been obvious), but I'm still finding my groove. My next one is already in the can, but I'll make sure to keep that in mind. We shot this one in kind of a hurry, so it's not what I would normally have tried to do, but I wanted to get Prince's feedback while I actually had him right next to me, so this one was a bit of a compromise.

Had some NB minimus but i have pretty messed up paddle feet and they were too narrow for me. Same reason i hate Feiyues which have a super restrictive toe box. As mentioned above, Lems all the way for me.

I have the nine2five for the office, 2 pairs of primals, some of their deck shoes for the summer months, and some boulder boots to walk the dog. Awesome little company and cracking products.

That said I do have some vivobarefoot work shoes too which are a bit smarter.

I literally never wear anything but barefoots/minimals now and my foot, ankle strength has increased no end.

Cheers.

I wear a US 13, and wide to boot, but the thing I liked least about the fei yue's is that the soles feel way to convex for me, so I always felt like they were high centered.

I have to wear their "wide" version; the regular is too narrow for me as well. But I'm assuming you've tried that one already, and that your feet are simply too wide...

2 pairs of primals

Those look nice! How "tough" is the sole on them? Would running on concrete/asphalt wear it out like it does the NB/Minimus (which are a "trail shoe" i.e. not designed for such abuse), or do you think they would last noticeably longer?

BTW, as a side note -- been running in Keens (Clearwater CNX) for a couple months now, and they've been really, really good.
Last weekend I did 112,000 steps (we have this "stepping challenge" via Fitbit where I work), with the total of 15.5 mi running and 11 or 12 hours of walking, in those sandals and -- no problems or blisters. Very impressed, FWIW. They also are stretchy and conform to the foot really well (for me at least). 4mm -- really wish they made 0-drop ones!

Yeh agreed, I have heard that they apparently flatten out over time ... but the pain in my toes stopped that prolonged wear happening!

my feet are a mess of broken toes and excessive width. I did have the wide ones and they still didn't fit my feet right. :(

ref the primal, I actually wear some Wide Inov8's for running, the Primal s are more like a casual, 'movement' or fitness shoe IMO But i know some free runners wear them. Very durable to be honest and you might get on fine with them for road work. I was once caught out about 12 miles from home with no wallet and a dead phone and had to run home in them and it was fine :D

People may be wondering how i know a bit about these types of shoes ... A failed business venture, but I ended up investigating the whole 'barefoot minimal' market pretty in depth haha.

cheers
Chris.
