paypal fraud?

Postby ashe on Tue Nov 18, 2008 10:46 pm

got the following email, which i'm pretty sure is a phishing scam. i went to paypal and logged in normally.

PayPal Resolution Center: Your account is limited.

Why is my account access limited?

As part of our security measures, we regularly screen activity in the PayPal system. During a recent screening, we noticed an issue
regarding your account:

Our system detected unusual number of invalid logging attempts on you account from these blacklist ip address.

(Your case ID for this reason is **********.)

How can I restore my account access?

For your protection, we have limited access to your account until additional security measures can be completed. We apologize for any
inconvenience this may cause. In order to assist us with this security measure, we ask that you send us a photocopy or scan documents listed
below and return them via email to [email protected] :

- A clear copy of your Passport or Photographic Drivers Licence or I.D. Card (both sides).

- A clear copy of both sides of the credit/debit card on your Paypal profile.

- A clear copy of a recent bank statement or utility bill on which your name and address are clearly visible - less than 3 months old.

Completing all of the checklist items will automatically restore your account access

Thank you for using PayPal!

Seems to be contradicting itself - login has been restricted, but you cannot reply to the e-mail, so instead login to your PayPal account? Whoops!

Yeah, it's a phishing scam. There are tons of those for paypal with bogus links in the e-mails.

Of course paypal is a scam unto itself, but that's another topic.

Paypal use an automated phone service to unlock accounts anyways and you find out when you log in that you've been limited.

Another thing to remember is that email is not a secure means of communication, so sending all that information via email (to anyone, even if the email was @paypal.com), is a bad idea.

On a different note -- I've only had positive experiences with Paypal itself, FWIW.

Never login to your account through a link which has been sent to you. Always pull up the main site and login through there...

yeah that's a very well known paypal phishing scam. it's NOT paypal. paypal would never ask for that information from you, esp electronically.

Phishing is getting complicated.... I think most of us are pretty savvy about email scams from Kenya, but a few weeks ago I got a Text Message from the Boston Credit Union, which is the institution of choice for most of the BPD, BFD, and BEMS.IT said there was some unusual activity on my credit card, and to call them to verify. When you call in, it asks you for the CC #, your SSN, and your DOB. Problem is I dont have any credit cards and I don't bank with them. I called the Credit Union, and it turned out to be day 1 of a 2 week assault of identity theft on their customers.
