Need help from those who know Chinese (and English)

Postby Dmitri on Fri Nov 21, 2008 11:40 am

A good friend of mine is thinking of opening an "esoteric exercise" type of business (qigong, yoga, tai chi, etc.) called "Good Spirit". The following Chinese characters were chosen for the logo:

Image

His explanation was (he doesn't speak or read/write Chinese so he got help from some guy at work), I quote, "characters on the left mean good health (or exercise)- pronounced something like Chen Quong. The characters on the right mean being happy, happiness, being in good spirit (something like that)-pronounce Eu Quai. If you put all four characters together it could be said to wish someone a happy new year (or wishing them good health)."

I just wanted to summon the EF's powerful forces to double-check the meaning and proper "spelling" of these (to avoid a potential "reverse Chinglish" effect :)), and also maybe someone might have suggestions re. how else the phrase "good spirit" could be expressed in Chinese, given the context?

Thank you.

Jiankang yukuai - health and happiness, it's the kind of phrase that you might write on a birthday or holiday card.
Since you asked for suggestions, at the risk of sounding too negative, I'd first suggest that your friend refrain altogether from incorporating phrases in a language that he does not understand into his corporate logo... this kind of thing just strikes me as rather Orientalist. Barring that, I'd suggest maybe something like 神和, 'harmonized spirit' as being closer to the mark, but I'm not a native speaker so take that with a grain of salt.

jian kang yu kuai - it reminds me of the the other names that chinese companies select for 'good fortune'..

double happy golden horse trading
golden horse fortune furniture
good fortune restaurant
5 happiness restaurant
5 hairs restaurant (yes - wu mao was the owner's nick name)

even some of the factories in china had some bizarre (to a western eye) names, but I've forgotten most of them despite the laughs we used to have about them
"The power of Christ compels you!" *spank*
now with ADDED SMOOTHOSITY! ;D
