One of the favourite Aikido videos.

Koichi Kashiwaya Sensei shows his amazing cutting skills by hitting a bamboo and breaking without breaking the paper that holds it.

Watch the video and you can work out the science behind it:

Very cool. In an exaggerated way, if you hang something that bends and is light, like a towel, and you hit it fast in the center, the edges flap towards your hand. So is this a matter of speed, impact location of broken stick(general center of stick), and impact location on hitting stick(best mass transfer)? Is there a specific number/measurement for each that has to be achieved for that effect to work? Where the hell are those guys that like to measure punches from different martial artists, stereotyping the results as universal, instead of individual to the subjects? ;D

I think that photographing it with a high speed camera would show a lot more. It would have been great to see on Mythbusters. Maybe in the show's next iteration.

Or if he'd hook up with the dude from Smarter Every Day. He looks like J-Roc but films pretty much everything in High Speed.
