China to spend $361 billion on green energy, predicts 13 million jobs

Earlier this week, Lloyd posted disturbing footage of smog rolling into Beijing. It's real, tangible air quality and health issues like these that have made green energy and a shift away from fossil fuels a political imperative in China in a way they just don't seem to be here in the US right now.

One more example of this: Reuters reports on new government plans to plough 2.5 trillion yuan ($361 billion) into green energy by 2020. Interestingly, the government seems to be stressing not just the health and environmental benefits of such a move, but jobs too. The plan should, they say, create 13 million jobs in the clean energy industries—a welcome boost at a time when China's move away from polluting, heavy industries may also cost jobs in favor of cleaning up air.

Given current question marks over US commitment to climate action, this is one more welcome sign that progress will continue. And as more renewable energy infrastructure gets built, technology costs fall everywhere—leading to considerable disruption, even in markets where leaders would seek to delay.

It should be noted, of course, that while huge, $361 billion is unlikely to be enough to shift the country to a firmly clean energy pathway. By 2020, the government still predicts that only 15% of the country's energy production will be, with coal still accounting for 58%.

Still, much like G7 commitments to complete decarbonization, moves like this are about more than just their specific goals and targets. They send a clear signal to markets about which way the wind is blowing, and once investment starts to shift, new and more ambitious pathways become possible

Major powers with major consumer markets should be incentivizing clean energy to develop faster, imho. However, Big Oil lobbying has a grip on the US govt. Most of the top 7 companies (by market cap) need energy for their data centers and can see the need for sustainable, clean energy. This is one of Tesla's main goals, too.

China is also looking to take over TPP with a lot of countries willing to sign on and excluding the US and Vietnam.

I believe the Trump administration will be a good time for China to get its ducks in a row to surpass the US. As it is President Twitter is making President Xi look like a god while president Twitter looks like a clueless child lost in a muesum.

If you mean economically, well, there's a reason those Make America Great caps are made in China. In reality, the "economy" is only a metaphor. If an American thinks the economy sucks, it doesn't matter how many millionaires are created. Many American millionaires profit by taking advantage of economic opportunities that China offers. Remember the last debates when Trump said that China was dumping steel in the US. Fact check: True. And, Trump was buying it (and Russian steel) rather than American steel. Yeah, it was a good business decision, but the problem's not China. Sure, tariffs can be applied to make Chinese steel more expensive, but it won't make American steel cheaper. Builders (like Trumpco) would simply use less steel, more concrete, or find another supplier.

However, I think that China is already the next enemy only because of the economic conflict. Trump asks why we support Japan, but doesn't like the island air bases China is building. What's he gonna do about it, though? What does the US have to do with the South China Sea? The Philippine president doesn't want us. Don't even ask about Laos or Vietnam. Taiwan ... a bit more complicated situation.

The reason why china does well is the system of government.
They can focus on a project in ways the US can not due to the system in use here.

Once their gov decides something will get done it pretty much gets it done.
Used to work in the solar industry. China decided long ago that it wanted to be the one stop shop for clean energy products. Solar cells, wind turbines ect.

The US waited to see how the market would turn out. In so doing it got left behind. Now it can not compete with China's production scale of manufacturing which allows their products to be produced at a lower price point. Worked in companies that went out of business because of this...

What the US has in its favor is the unstableness of China towards the outside world. Which is both good and bad. China is and can be self sufficient.

The US has a large export business of what's called capital equipment "high tech tool sets used in manufacturing processes" .

Which if not allowed to be sold in China either from the Chinese end or the US’s end would and has caused them to just make their own products….
Intel is a good example,

The embargo on the Xeon chips did not affect the building of the Sunway TaihuLight supercomputer.
China already had set its sights on building the first supercomputer that could deliver a performance of more than 100 petaflops, Top500 wrote.

China has no 1st and 2nd Amendments related rights so the Communist Party can do what they want without the people getting up in arms. If they do, only one place to go and its under ;D

The U.S. in April last year banned the export of some Intel Xeon chips to China for use in supercomputers, with the government concerned the chips would be used in activities against U.S. interests. The Tianhe-2 and Tianhe-1A were allegedly used in nuclear weapon tests, which partly spurred the export ban.

wow that really worked out well. So now they have their own super chips,,,what will the US do next? 8-)

The embargo on the Xeon chips did not affect the building of the Sunway TaihuLight supercomputer. China already had set its sights on building the first supercomputer that could deliver a performance of more than 100 petaflops, Top500 wrote.

But the embargo did strengthen the resolve and precipitated efforts of China to build its own homegrown chips.

For the Chinese, the development of indigenous IT equipment, especially for high-performance computing, is a matter of priority and national pride, said Nathan Brookwood, principal analyst at Insight 64.

"They are trying to show their moxie here, and they are doing a pretty good job," Brookwood said.

What if there were rare minerals so valuable to many of the United States' most advanced weapons systems that their disappearance from the marketplace could threaten America's national security interests—and those rare minerals were, in fact, almost solely in the hands of the country's fiercest global economic competitor who held a monopoly over them?

Despite years of concern in the U.S. and around the world, China still controls a monopoly on Rare Earth Elements (REEs) that are critical to a number of advanced weapons systems, mobile devices and emerging green technologies. And the situation isn't likely to change any time soon.

China is "winning" because it doesn't play by the rules in trade, currency, or security:

- China violates its neighbor's sovereignty in the South China Sea.
- China does not honor its WTO trade commitments.
- China manipulates its currency.

The reason they've gotten away with this is because for the last 8 years Obama has had a policy of appeasement; every time he tried to make China back down on any of those 3 things, they've stood firm and Obama has flinched.

Well Donald has his stuff made in China, like other American companies. They'll say it is just good business (like not paying taxes). China will say that it's not doing anything illegal if it dumps and we buy. It's just business.

Afa the South China Sea, why should we care about what China does with its neighbors? Why should we care what Russia does with its neighbors? Why are we in Cuba? (Hint: because of Russia). Now, what if China decides that it wants to help Cuba? Why not? What principles can/will Americans stand on other than "America first?" Why won't China say the same thing? Why are they wrong?

Like Windy says, "we do it."
