I Too Am a Drunken Daoist - I Switched to Pinyin Years Ago

A few years back my cousin was training for his budding MMA career and was injured. His journey into medical cannabis, psychedelic exploration of his self, and travels around the world will be talked about at a later time. Needless to say, I find my cousin Ray a very interesting person and he recommended I listen to Daniele Bolelli's Drunken Taoist podcast.

This led to an expansion of my podcast world that I quite enjoyed. I started reading Daniele's books shortly after listening to the podcast for the first time. The man runs on workahol and has started another podcast called History On Fire. Having received the blessing of the Godfather of History - Dan Carlin - Daniele's new podcast is epic in scope and story. He brings a life to historical tales and individuals that my history books seemed to lack entirely. I would often draw out battles I read about as comics growing up but this is far more illustrative and uses his Italian storyteller's accent to its full potential.

Bolelli's autobiography is truly heartfelt and one of the most sincere works I've ever read. Not Afraid literally brought tears to my eyes. After listening to his podcast for a few years, this book was heart wrenching (being exhausted from food poisoning might have contributed to my state). I am just now having my first child and the thought that my fiancee might die in such a short time after our child's birth is truly terrifying - I am grateful both of us continue to be in good health.

Create Your Own Religion: A How-To Book without Instructions was also an amazing bit of writing. Many of his Father Bolelli segments from the Drunken Taoist podcast are reflected here. I came from a Jesus Camp-like church and many of my personal sentiments are written in a far more succinct fashion than my own pedantry will allow. I recommended it to one of my classmates locally - it is available at the Phoenix Public Library.

Daniele's Taoist Lecture Series blends his experience with Native American studies, classical Greco-Roman philosophers, and his own lens of Daoist practice that largely excludes the esoteric experience I have sought for my own experience. Granted, I had no need to ever prove my own ferocity growing up in Stockton, California. While there is much I think can be explained a little more accurately with some knowledge of the esoteric side of Daoism - Bolelli does an excellent job of explaining Daoist philosophy and his own view of it.

Don't forget - the man is a martial arts expert as well. Having trained with luminaries such as Tim Cartmell, Bill Vigil, Dr. Mark Cheng and more, Daniele was tapped as an expert for a Bruce Lee documentary. Recently he helped train Savannah Em for her first fight by adding some oomph! from xingyiquan. A true luminary in bringing the brutality of traditional kung fu into the MMA ring.

Do not forget that the man has a funny side. Whether it's in goofy conversations with Duncan Trussel or his wonderful banter with Joe Rogan and Dan Carlin - Daniele is a versatile individual that is adapting to the demands of a new media podcast world. Sadly, there is a dearth of paying customers for podcasts. Many of us must turn to monetizing our sites with Amazon affiliate links, eBay affiliate links, and creating projects of vast scope with little hope of payment for our efforts. Cory Doctorow even makes his eBooks free.

Hopefully there will be a windfall in our audience groups and those of us who help carry forward the flag of no bullshit traditions can eat from our efforts. Xingyiquan is growing in popularity and I hope to see more of it in the ring soon. My own modest efforts here have not yielded much so far. Hopefully the conversion from WordPress to Drupal will go smoothly and we will have better luck with search engine optimization.

I enjoyed the blog immensely!
I say that because I have come across the few scuzzy ;D tricked out teachers and I have used some of their tricks ::) albeit in a positive and objective manner.

Forget about secret styles, lineages and other BS and find your own art and make it yours! IN that way, you recreate (re-create) a final level of reality that is and can be accessible with some level of objective skill, learning and understanding. If you have to test it on the street, just pull out the CCW and shoot the bastard ;D . Of course, make sure you know the rules of CCW and prevail accordingly.
