I like Ashtanga - it's low on loving qi hippy dippy shit and high on 'genuine workout'. ;D

tell them to go slow and find someone who knows how to teach people to open THEIR body, not strive toward Asana

the motherlode of iyengar in SF http://www.iyisf.org/ though I imagine there is plenty of less expensive iyengar folks who are closer to you to - but they do have an introductory series

My first exposure to yoga was from an iyengar trained teacher - good stuff

There've been previous threads on this where kshurika gave a lot of info, but I'd stay away from yoga 'cause it's just a fad.

I heartedly second this.

Power yoga is great!

a good balance of moving and balance asanas.
Some difficulty at first, but breakthroughs in a short period of time and a great great workout.
Coconuts. Bananas. Mangos. Rice. Beans. Water. It's good.

Here's a good Hatha Yoga primer to start out with:

Image

This routine, the Sun Salutation or Surya Namaskar, is traditionally practiced as a morning exercise at sunrise in order to stretch the body after sleeping, and as a warm-up before practicing any other yoga postures (asanas). I have personally practiced this routine for more than 45 years with great results. The increased strength, flexibility, balance, and body control acquired from these and other more demanding yoga postures is a valuable addition to any martial art training program, IMO. :)

QFT.

It's like with IMA -- look for the good teacher, not the art.

I liked Ashtanga, but then I don't know anything about Yoga aside from what I saw at the local.
