Thanksgiving Day (USA)

Postby klonk on Thu Nov 27, 2008 4:40 am

Today is the day of Thanksgiving. In these times it means various things to various people. For some it is a day to vilify the Pilgrims, for example. To me it is a time to pause and remember all, the bad together with the good. I conclude America is mostly good and truly exceptional. Things happen here that never have before, the great experiment continues, and to the devil with those who would tear it down.

God bless America!

It'll be around 4:00 or 5:00 EST, if you're in the neighborhood. ;)

It's America's version of a weird sort of Yom Kippur it seems? lol

Uh, no. We have a feast, not a fast.

You'd be surprised at how jewish, american traditions really are. Most people just don't know it. ;D
Canadians too and westerners in general have the underpinnings in their society that are directly drawn from judaism.
I'd hazard a guess that it's because christianity is basically judaism with a twist. lol

I like any tradition with good food in it. (Extra points for stuffing and cranberry sauce!)

I despise any tradition with forced gift-giving in it.

But reciprocity is key to survival.
Why not instill that in everyone vis a vis forced gift giving holidays!

Reciprocity - if they give you poop, give them poop, too? :D

Did you ever get what you wanted as a gift? (I remember once my dad got me a taiji book - I do bagua, not taiji, but it's the thought that counts! He did try, I have to give him that! Usually it is sweaters from mom, of course.)

well, to get what I want, i ask specifically for something, or i go get it myself.

but a gift. well, that's something that someone chose for you based on how they see your wants or how they want to connect to you through their own understanding of your desire.

if you get a gift that is completely unfitting or inappropriate to who you are, then it is likely that the gift isn't so much a gift as an offering. lol

I think that most people are just loath to buy things like swords, spears, or flying meteor hammers as gifts :D

Gifts really do suck, though, if you don't live in a huge house - these things that I don't need take up a lot of space!
