Fascist Britain

Postby GrahamB on Sat Sep 09, 2017 1:03 am

The hard right seems to be rising everywhere, Russian aggression, terrorist attacks in Europe, N Korea is rising, it's a dangerous time.......and in Britain the Brexit vote is leading to the threat to democracy like nothing we've ever seen. We're heading into fascist Britain....

From Robert Preston:

Early next week we will learn whether Theresa May can govern - when she faces two life-or-death votes, both of which are seen by her opponents as outrageous attempts to rig our democracy.

The first vote is on the second reading of the European Union (Withdrawal) bill, which would give ministers unprecedented power to make laws without consulting parliament.

The second vote, disclosed by HuffPost, would guarantee this minority government a majority on important legislative and scrutiny committees.

The two initiatives are connected - in that the most discussed compromise to soften the undemocratic impact of the EU (Withdrawal) Bill would be to create a new committee or use an existing one to oversee which EU-related laws are translated into pure British law without the involvement of parliament.

But obviously such a new committee would be a fig leaf if it contained a majority of May yes-people.

So although it looked yesterday as though most Tory critics of May's approach to Brexit would not side with Labour in Monday night's EU bill vote, those critics will have to think again.

In giving May a majority on the second reading, Brexit-wary Conservative MPs such as Grieve, Morgan and Soubry could find themselves undermining their own plan to effectively protect MPs' rights through later amendments to the bill - because Tuesday's attempt to rig the composition of parliamentary committees would demolish any such protection (forgive the Lewis Carroll logic here - such is parliament).

Having lost her majority in the general election she chose to call, for a while May talked the talk of reflecting the will of the people by trying to work consensually with MPs of other parties.

It is now a case of consensus conshmensus. With the aid of her most important minister, the wily chief whip, Williamson, she will attempt to rule by diktat via the gaming of parliamentary rules.

She has returned back from holiday with the spirit of the Venezuelan approach to democracy seemingly coursing through her veins.

It's always been a "dangerous time"...

People just love to panic and worry.

I would say the world leaders just love to spread panic and worry, they seem to feed on it

History is repeating itself. Hiding one's head in the sand is not going to change anything to it. It's urgent to become aware, see the signs.

Posted in a group I follow:

"The more I think ofBrexit, the more it smells of Nazism. 90 years ago it all started saying that the miserable conditions of German people were caused by a minority of non-Germans.
Then it was the evil governments of France, UK, US that were strangling Germany with the post war reparations.
Then came the discriminations. The jobs had to go to Germans, the others were not entitled to have one.
Immigrants were encouraged to leave, so that society would be only Germans. The others had to apply for special documents and had to be identifiable.
Intimidation was another powerful weapon.
The Great Repeal bill grants special powers to government, bypassing the scrutiny of the parliament, much like what happened in Germany in 1933.
What else must happen in this country before the majority of people realise the dangerous slope of xenophobia, fascism and Nazism it is going down?"

What else must happen

Ans: History must repeat itself. Many in Britain and the world were comfortable with Nazi ideas. Of course, many in Germany, too. Many of them were Jews. Anyway, when did their opinions change?

Those who don't think it will affect them won't worry, but will change their minds when it does. It's the same thing in the US. As long as someone thinks he's part of "us" when the speaker says "we," it's all good. It's just when someone finds out that when the nationalists say "we," they mean "not you," that the problem in terms of principle becomes clearer.

So, flying the Nazi swastika next to the stars and stripes or the Union Jack is normal for now. It's better to know and be prepared.

Ok so lets say we are aware... What is your solution? (to quote you :P )

You may not remember these groups. But i have heard tale after tale about these assholes on the streets in the 80's connected to football hooliganism. I know people who were on the recieving end disfigured for life and RobP has mentioned it numerous times. Same people ... different decade. One thing we can be sure these assholes like, is a fight. Maybe a different approach should be considered.

For those of us like myself, who inhabit a nuanced middle position, anti big government, anti socialism, anti fascism, anti EU(political institution), Pro human rights, pro freedom of speech, pro equal immigration opportunity … It is a hard time to have a discussion. Nuance seems to have left our political discussion in favour of absolutism.

... and finally to quote Yoda:

“Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.”

It really does all start with fear ....

hmmm.

You started this thread due to genuine concern one would assume?

So have you considered a solution to your fears?

Normally people respond like that when they dont want to engage in a difficult discussion. I will give you the benefit of the doubt there though.
